Zero deposit mortgages would get a lot of people into financial strife. The reality is that if you don't have enough capital to cover a 20% deposit then you are unlikely to have sufficient cashflow to cover the repayments on more than 80% of the property value, especially when interest rates eventually increase.

True, I know some banks (I think ASB?) used to do zero-deposit mortgages, but they stopped around the time of the Global Financial Crisis - and I can understand why.
