Pretty shady that if you were overseas (for the tiny 3-4 weeks notice) that they'd auto renew a contract. Likely going to shift power companies anyway and this is definitely helping make that decision. 

 

Back to OP, we are on contract with Mercury and the rates are fixed for the term so you must not be on a contract. Have you rang and asked?

 

Finally a response from Mercury, I'm not on a contract :-). But only need to wait almost a week.

Any one use electrickiwi? They seem to have good prices.

Electric Kiwi pricing isn't significantly different to what Mercury are proposing for you - in Lower Hutt on a low use they're 30c per day and .2311 per kWh excl GST for no contract.

I don't know what PPD you're getting from Mercury but a quick Google suggests you might be on 12% which means with 12% their new proposed rates would be an effective 29.33c per day and .2395 per kWh excl GST.

You may well find that committing to a contract with Mercury could well match or undercut Electric Kiwi. All of the big companies are having to aggressively fight to stop churn.

EDIT: - Looks like the Mercury PPD is only 10% not 12% so those figures I quoted above are slightly higher. You do get $200 Airpoints Dollars for signing a contract with Mercury so need to weight that up with looking at the total overall cost.

Also received a notice from Mercury (Piped Gas only) for an increase, just began the switching process to Nova Energy this morning. Ends up being cheaper anyway, so.... I guess thanks for bringing it to my attention Mercury?
