Paul1977:

I've read about the 2x 18V models, but I can't see anywhere in NZ that sells them unfortunately. Which is a shame because it would definitely be the way to go.

Yeah, I'm 99% sure that Ryobi is exclusive to Bunnings, so you won't find their mowers anywhere else - and it looks like they don't sell the 2x18v model any more. It was still around when I purchased a 1x36v mower from them about a year ago, but I can't find it on Ryobi's website now: https://www.ryobi.co.nz/outdoor/products/list/category/lawn-mowers

Edit: meant to add - be very sure BEFORE you purchase it that you can return the 18v model if it's not adequate for your purposes (and I'd be surprised if they do this), as it's surely false economy if you end up having to purchase a second mower if the first proves to be inadequate for the job (especially, given the experience of others).

That's why I'd recommend seeing if you can borrow a mower before you purchase. Personally, I'd suggest it's worth saving a bit more money and buying a 36v model (given the 2 x 16v doesn't seem to be available). I don't have any of the problems with my 36v that Dynamic's having with the 18v model

Have a read through here  https://www.productreview.com.au/c/electric-lawn-mowers  The Ryobi 36v mowers get very good reviews.

Has anyone tried the Black and Decker line trimmers? The Black & Decker 33cm GL7033 seems lightweight, mains power which is fine with me, and fairly cheap.

The Mitre 10 reviews say they're not all that durable, but for $80 doesn't really matter that much. I'm open to other mains powered ones too.

From experience, the cheapest ones are abnormally small, so can be quite hard on your back when using as you have to hunch over. Worth going through the motions with it in the store to see how it works for you.

Thanks, I'll check that, but I'm not so tall so that's a good thing.

Is your original trimmer still going? Have you seen this page http://www.asiteaboutnothing.net/g_line-trimmer.html ?

Yeah the original trimmer is still in great condition, but the head is absolutely awful. As that article says, trim for 3 minutes, then spent 3-5 minutes getting the line out - I have exactly the same model trimmer as that article you linked to.

I had no idea you could get replacement heads, that's a much better idea than replacing the whole unit, thanks :) That one you linked to looks interesting - looks like you pretty much clamp some robust line into the metal part you buy, attach it, and it lasts ages. The line I've purchased here lasts about 30 seconds.

I'll either buy that Turbo3 or something similar from the hardware store :)

@mdf how's the Ryobi mains lawn mower going? My old mower is slowly getting worse so I'm looking again. Reviews on the Ryobi site and elsewhere aren't encouraging - they say they work ok to start with but quickly get worse over time. They're only $300 at Bunnings at the moment.

I'll also consider the battery mowers, but I'd prefer a cheaper mains based mower, as I've had one for a decade and I'm used to it. I'll look at other brand of corded mowers too, like the Bosch.

Still going good for me after ~3-4 (?) years! The blade badly needs a sharpen but that is on me for not getting around to doing it. Other than that it is fine.

It does struggle a bit on long wet grass since it does seem to clump up inside it, but I don't think that is specific to Ryobi rather just a bit of a lower power output compared to big petrol ones. I try and stay on top of things to head that off, but when it is really long I tend to mow it twice, once one the highest setting then again a bit lower.

I'd probably go for a battery option if/when it goes to the big backyard in the sky, since I do find the cord a bit of a pain personally, but if you're comfortable with that then I would recommend it.

In terms of those reviews, I'd disagree on the customer service point. Typically I've found Bunnings exchanges/warranty claims overall excellent. No-one seems to bat an eyelid about any claims that something isn't working so long as you can product the receipt.

Nice, thanks. Cord is no problem for me, I've been using one for a decade. I'll likely go buy one on the weekend.

The reviews for the Ozito 1500W are almost as good or even better, and it's only $178. I'll check that out too, but happier with a more reputable brand Ryobi.

👍

Though I wouldn't rule out Ozito entirely. In 2016/17 Einhell (German titan) bought Ozito, apparently just to get in to Bunnings. Tools that are Ozito rebadged Einhells are awesome tools, especially for the price. Pre/non-Einhell tools are much more variable.

These do look awfully similar (colour aside) and have a it-would-be-weird-if-this-was-a-coincidence "1536" in the model number:

I didn't bother with the translations but seems to review okay/well-for-the-price https://www.amazon.co.uk/Einhell-Elektro-Rasenm%C3%A4her-GE-EM-1536-HW/dp/B00HTYFPP0

Yeah, they're the same thing with a different color. For $178 with a three year guarantee they might be a good option. The Ozito Reviews are generally very good at 4.1/5. The closest Ryobi I can find is an older model at 3.4/5, so they're probably similar. The Ozito is about half the price, not really bothered between $180 and $300 but why spend an extra $120 if it's not needed! It might come down to what looks better / more robust in the store.

FWIW consider comfort too. I use the joystick handles on the Ryobi quite a bit since it feels more comfortable to me, but my wife always uses the normal bar grip. Just from looking at the pictures, it looks like Ozito has a single bar to turn on which might not be as comfortable as Ryobi's triggers? Height adjust systems look different too. Ozito might be easier to change?

I'll give them both a push around the store, thanks for pointing that out.

I have a Flymo Chevron 34vc lawn mower which I have had since 2014. This day the plastic height adjust arm broke. Can not find this part anywhere. Flymo site states it is no longer manufactured. (Arm Height Adjust #5755824). It is such a shame as this is a great little mower. If anybody knows where I can get the correct part. We would even buy a clapped out old mower if the required part is good.

I will attempt glueing it back together but I fear it will just break again.

So probably in the market for a new electric mower. We only have approx 25 sq m of lawn. Plus we prefer mains over battery.

@timmmay what did you end up getting in the end ?

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
