MadEngineer: Where in the country are you located? Do you have any ideas on possible sources of the rats such as junk yard neighbours or abandoned/unkempt properties? Creeks or waterways?

Councils employ environmental officers whose job it is to take care of vermin.

Wellington suburbs. Neighbours are all fine, no waterways, there's a small area of bush near our house.

Let them know regardless. I don’t know what sort of response you’ll get from the Wellington council but can’t hurt to ask.

He said stuff some chicken wire up the down pipe. I'm not sure it will stay there permanently, and I've found two possible additional entry points. He's back tomorrow so I can ask then.

In Wellington there is a campaign to get rid of rats. Many areas have Predator Free groups. My neighbour was lent a trap by the Miramar group. https://www.pfw.org.nz/get-involved/

The pest guy told me traps are about 60% effective, poison about 95%. He said he put traps in a root that was known to have a dozen rats and not one got caught. Poison got them.

I'll email the council to see if there's anything they can do.

Success rate depends on lots of things including what bait you are using. Some people don't like poison because they have pets.
My neighbour has started trapping because her cat has bought 6 rats home recently. The cat isn't to fussy about whether the rat is dead or alive so survivors get a chance to escape and maybe hide at her place.

We've got chooks, have an auto-feeder that is vermin-proof, stored feed in a plastic rubbish bin with secure lid. Rats are smart, they knew feed was in the bin, so they chewed a neat hole through the side of the bin turning it into their own auto-feeder.

Most poisons make the rodent feel extremely thirsty - the idea being they head for a source of water, dying outside the house.

True. Though they can generally be found, even if it means opening up something.

The pest guy told me of a machine that you can put close to the smell that helps disguise the smell and break it down. Or something like that.

I asked WCC, and told them I think there are rats between private property and the a motorway. Wellington city council say

Wellington City Council does not provide assistance pests and rodents on road reserve or private property. We recommend contacting the Greater Wellington Regional Council for advice.

The Greater Wellington Council website just tells you how to get rid of them yourself. It was worth a try.

The idea that poisoned rats look for water is wishful thinking. Sick rats are like humans, they lie around in bed. If the nest is inside that's where they are likely to end up.
