Additionally, the dealer gave me a loaner Stihl "RMA 443" mower this week. I've only used it once so far, but despite the fact it looks like an ugly toy, I think it might be better than the Masport.

Pros:
-It's quieter than the Masport, but seems to be just as capable.
-It has an eco mode (half power) it can automatically use, and it seems to cut back to this when the battery is flat giving you some warning. The Masport just stops.
-The catcher is a better design, it gets more in when mowing because it's more like a bucket, and emptying is easier due to its flip top head.
-Cut height is super easy to adjust.

Cons:
-It's all plastic, and that concerns me. I'm unconvinced about the durability of plastic for things like this (although I suppose their chainsaws do just fine).
-It's ugly. It has tiny wheels and a fat body.

I bought a (can't remember the brand) 24V orange plastic electric mower a couple of years ago. I too was concerned about the durability, And, on the very first mow, I ran over a stoner or something that broke off a bit of a plastic reinforcement rib :( . Nevertheless, it hasn't deteriorated and is still going very well.

We've just replaced our Worx battery mower with the plastic Ozito dual battery version. Another poster mentioned the steel deck version, but that's not currently being sold in NZ and according to Ozito there was no plan to sell that model here. The Worx mower still works okay, but the battery is all but dead. That's unsurprising as it uses SLA batteries.

Pros of the Ozito:

Li-Ion battery. Already have other Ozito PXC tools.
Warranty (5 years on tool, 3 years on battery).
Catcher works better than on the Worx.

Cons:

Looks like a toy.
Battery cover looks like it could break if not careful.
Two batteries which must be removed to charge (The Worx model allowed charging separately or on the mower).
Narrower mowing area than the Worx.
'Key' system is annoying... unsure if the battery will drain if just left in.

I bought an Ego 56v LM2100ESP self propelled brushless mower in late December 2018, it has the big 7.5 a/h battery. It was going fine (not a massive lawn) until the week before last when it decided to simply to not start again after mowing about quarter of my lawn. Dead in the water. Battery etc is fine.

Warranty repair now underway for a week, waiting on result. Looking on the interwebs seems there's a few of these with wiring problems at the point where the handles join the body - wire pinching, and I'm told there's a newer model out now that's better.

These aren't cheap mowers, I was really happy with it until it just stopped on me. The support seems pretty good here in NZ through Mitre10.

Ego seem to make good quality kit, I've also got their hedge trimmer which is an absolute weapon, and their blower which is also excellent.. hopefully I'll get my mower back soon.

I bought the Ego LM2135E-SP mower few months ago and it has been great. I give it a wash from bottom and top of the mower with the garden hose after every mow and have not seen any issues. I hope I do not run into any bearing issues as such like OP has experienced. I always remove the battery before giving it a wash.

Do whatever you want to do man.

I’m contemplating a Stihl versus an Ego.

Agree, the Stihl looks like a toy and is all plastic, but the loaner I took home for a trial did a great cut.

The Ego on the other hand is built like a tank.

My lawn is over several levels and mower has to be carried, so the Stihl seems the obvious choice as it is super light compared to the Ego, I’m just worried about how durable it will be over the long term.

Anyway, this thread has been very helpful as most people’s experience appears positive re electric mowers.

CokemonZ: To add to that, 5 year replacement warranty, what more can you ask for?

Tbh definatelty a little lower quality finish than ryobi, but as you can only get them both from the same retailer I don't think it matters.

Adding to my Ozito lawnmower story. It started to die - would power up then fade out.

It seems the power comes up through a strip that is connected to the adjustable handles and it can get bent or dirty.

Any way I took it back and they swapped it - no questions asked - great. Now that I have checked it out I'm pretty confident I could have fixed it, but you know, less than a year old and a 5 year warranty - why not.

Only thing I'm disappointed about is bunnings wouldn't let me keep or buy the batteries from the old mower so I would have got a couple of extras.

I've also got the dual battery Ozito Mower. Packs up nice and small, and the 5 year warranty is great. Also picked up the weedeater and the Pole trimmer from the same range. So far very happy as one charge of the mower batteries is enough for all of our lawns.

I hadn’t heard of Ozito until this thread (as no Bunnings in Kapiti). Just had a look online and see that at $400 approx, they are about half the price of a Stihl.

Do the Ozito handle kikuyu grass ok?

The swappable battery Orzito products are actually Einhell from Germany. It might help to search under both brands.

I hate it when you get stoners on your lawn... never ran one over though, that seems extreme 🤣

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

LOL. I find if you don't keep them down, they start creeping up the walls.

I guess the blade must have hit his bong or something.

I bought the GreenWorks 40V mower last year, there's now a newer model, self-propelled that use the same battery as the old model.

Pros:

  • The same battery works with multiple tools from GreenWorks.
  • The mower can take two batteries, if you get two 6Ah batteries, you'll have 12Ah in total!
  • Save a bit with the combo deal (mower + line trimmer). I did a custom deal with them over online chat (mower + line trimmer + blower/vacuum + rapid charger).

Cons:

  • The only nuisance so far is the motor controller often slows down the RPM automatically to save power just when you need the high speed, but it does sense that, just there's a slight delay (about 1 sec). Not sure if the newer model is smarter.

It does if it's not too high. If it gets too vertical weedwhack first then run over the chopped up bits.

I received a call today saying my mower is ready to pick up. Apparently the whole motor has been replaced, and the washport removed.

This was probably the best non refund option available, I'm not totally happy with the outcome, there was zero communication about the decision... but I suppose it's fair.
