Why do you wrap them up in some news paper to make a log and not just throw a small coal shovel load in the burner.

Minimise the time the door is open when noxious gases can enter the house. And slows the rate of the burn. If you put a shovel full in, they all ignite together giving a furious burn. Whereas wrapped up as a log it burns like a log where the outer torrified pellets protect the inner ones.

I think context is everything. Completely agree with you re old inefficient fireplaces burning coal. Even just riding my bike through town in winter I end up smelling like a coal sweep. But take on the other hand a good ULEB (Ultra Low Emission Burners) like I had - a Pyroclassic - burning good dry wood that has been drying for at least a year and you see nothing coming out the chimney at all when it's running. Maybe all cities should be clean air zones?

Maybe the new ones are better, but burning wood for heat seems a bit caveman in 2020.

If you have a free source of wood, that would otherwise get burnt on a bonfire, or rot, then it potentially can be more environmentally friendly than some other forms of heating. But yes in the central city , it may not be the greatest, especially if running old style burners. In some towns now , they require people to replace their older woodburners over a certain age, if they sell their house.

were did you get the mesh logs from? and do they do a good job?

I purchased from Ebay. See this https://www.ebay.com/itm/112621909241 listing for Repose stainless steel mesh open face logs. I had some spare $$ in my Paypal account.

I start them off with some real logs as that seems to help, though kindling itself will set the surface of the "log" alight.

Gives a consistent burn, and I get a decent amount of gasification from them for my ULEB.

If I use three of them at the same time, I overfuel my ULEB (Masport Cromwell) which gets too hot and it starts to do funky things.
