If you want privacy go for mirrored rather than tinted. You can see through tinted just as easily as normal, just lets a little less light through.

i got tinted in my single glass and i can see a difference in terms of privacy compared to another window that have no tint (during the day)
So that is good enough for me. 😊

Mike61: I used NK windows for PVC replacements. They did a brilliant job. It was a while ago, 6+ years. If you are looking at double glazing existing frames see if Peters glazing is still operating. He is a Irish guy who always had good prices and did a good job.

We used NK. We are in Blenheim, but NK, and a company on the North Island, were the only two companies making PVC windows in NZ (at that time, and possibly still). They did a great job, and the builders we had in later all commented on them. The house is warmer and quieter, but you'd need triple glazing at least down there in Christchurch. ;-)

Grey tint reduces light and solar heat entry by around a third. When it is darker on one side of the glass it makes it harder to see from the other side.

The use of green tint in most cases has been superseded by low or medium solar heat gain low-e options like Xtreme and Performatech 206.

I got darkened glass in my office window, behind my PC monitor. It makes little difference. Mirrored might have been better but costs more.

There are dark grey / greylite and supergrey tints which are stronger than standard grey.

Mirror glass is good but you need to be careful with the specifications as there are many products and few people in joinery outfits are going to understand it.

Reflective layers can be placed on the outside or inside of the external frame usually on tinted glass. There are some products that combine reflectivity with a low-e coating negating the need for a low-e coating in addition to the reflective layer. Ask for argon and a thermal spacer and a 14-16mm air gap if possible if going that route.
