We installed a new front door ~18 months ago as part of other renovations.

We were very tempted by the aluminium option, but it wasn't available in a colour we wanted. We ended up with Duramax. Very good insulation and pretty dimensionally stable; you install it like a normal timber door and paint it (with some limitations) like a normal timber door. It does expand and contract a bit in direct sunlight (you can hear it creaking). Planning on using the same option when we move around to the back door.

The aluminium options we were looking at required aluminium frames to make the multi point locking work, so installation was more difficult as well - I don't remember the exact costs since it was all rolled up into one big bill, but I'm reasonably sure the Duramax option (ready hung at factory) installed by a builder was quicker and cheaper than the aluminium equivalent.

We did have an issue with the weather seal but the supplier fixed that without quibbling. Little bit of a hassle but not too much in the grand scheme of things.

Eva888:
Requested a quote to replace a leaking wooden back door with an aluminium double glazed one including frame. Estimate came to $2200 plus $1850 to install excluding any replacement of rotten timber or additional materials.

Am I out of touch? 4K seems excessive and I am wondering if it’s a 'get lost we are too busy,' estimate as they also wrote they can’t do the job till February.

Any advice and recommendations in the Wellington area for supply and install would be welcome.

I've just spoken to a friend whose son is a builder. When the son doesn't have a house build on the go he installs doors and windows for an aluminium joinery co in North Wellington area. I was told that even if the timber framing needed fixing a door replacement would be done in 1 day leaving only painting to be done. The builder would charge $80/hr. So even if there was a markup $1800+ is over the top. However there is high demand and the company he does work for has been lifting the price as every other firm is doing so. Basically while customers are prepared to pay there's no incentive for them not to put prices up.

Update. My door was finally installed by NuLook Kapiti today. I am thrilled with the installation. The installers did a great job and quite a few extras that I asked for. The price was less than the other quotes too but the wait was long. Apparently they are facing supply shortages and high demand for their products.
I was worried that because the house is Lockwood it was difficult to get precise measurements of the wall thickness but it fitted perfectly. Now waiting for heavy rain to test it but am certain it will be fine.

I would highly recommend them.
