kiwifidget:

We do have ants living in our external walls, and the fridge and freezer outlets are on the inside side of such a wall.

I hope its not them as they have proven impossible to get rid of so far. Short of tearing off all internal gib and getting at them directly.

Fire gets rid of ants.

Our insurance does not cover arson, but if the ants cause a fire we might be ok.

The ants aren't likely to start a fire but they are bad news for electrical sockets. I think they accidental bridge small gaps in the switches and get fried. The resulting smell seems to signal other ants that they are being attacked and they rush over and more get zapped. The resulting ant paste makes the switches stop working. It's possible you could end up with ants bridging phase and earth and tripping the rcd.
