Ok here is my update for those following this post.

After going back and forward with the installer about replacing the unit and getting sound measurements from a similar install I decided against replacing it.

I instead installed a small gate next to the unit and basically boxed it in with sound proofing underlaid with sound barrier vinyl.

Attached is the photo its not 100% finished yet but so far its taken the edge off the noise traveling down the fence @ around 10 db lower with gate closed.

I have no idea how long the sound proofing will last for outside but might spray it with silicon sealant or something?

That looks like a decent enough solution. Maybe a bit unslightly, but hopefully not.

We just paid $500 to get the Daikin "night mode" feature installed into a ducted heat pump. I was a bit annoyed given we already paid about $14K and the $3K heat pumps have it built in, but ok. When night mode is enabled we can't hear the outdoor unit from inside. We've never heard the indoor unit. The air moves slower through the vents, so we can't hear that either, though in the bedrooms we never hear it unless a room is on "turbo" mode anyway. They also disabled the breeze that runs when it's up to heat, making things a lot more comfortable. So that's all pretty good.

They did break something during the install though. It doesn't get up to heat properly any more, or takes many hours, unless you jack the target temperature up to 32 degrees. They're coming back to fix it today though, and there's an error code so hopefully they'll manage without waiting another four months for parts. The original outdoor unit was faulty, made a lot of weird noises, it took four months for a replacement to arrive in NZ, but it worked ok during that time.

@DataCraft How are you getting on with the longevity and efficacy of the sound proofing? We are experiencing the other side of this issue right now; the neighbour's unit is by our fence.. R32 as well, and the low frequencies are killing my sleep and sanity. Looking to find anything that could be effective - would love to hear how it's been going for you. Thanks!
