The problem with poly is that it prevents vapour diffusing out of wall once it gets in which can lead to dampness and rot, especially when impermeable exterior linings such as XPS are used.

We need to be careful when knocking NZ's building requirements by comparing them to overseas examples. Different environments (humidity levels/daily temperature swings etc) require different approaches, so whilst some concepts are readily transferable, others may be more specific to the local conditions than we initially think.

We got the Homerit PVC windows through Eco Doors and Windows in Wellington (http://www.edaws.co.nz - our house is on the bottom left of their home page). We are pretty happy, though we can still get condensation on the windows if we close up the house in winter. We went for the low-e glass (not argon) - there is more information that you probably want to know in the metro glasstech website (http://www.metroglasstech.co.nz/catalogue/053.aspx). The only thing that I would probably change would be to see if we could get plastic spacers in the IGUs, we have aluminium ones which conduct heat so while the centre of the windows often doesn't get condensation, we do get it near the edges more often and particularly near the corners.

We also got laminated windows in the lounge as we have had fading issues with furniture in the past.

Overall though I'm glad we did it. When we were getting quotes PVC came out more expensive than ordinary aluminium, but less than thermally broken aluminium. My wife didn't like the aluminium look, and thought that the PVC suited the house better. We had to do something though as our old wooden windows were falling apart

Yea we have the same issue with out wooden windows.

We also got the quote from Homerit.
