Panasonic here, I've never seen it frosted up. We have a floor console which is super quiet. Once it reaches temperature the fan inside is silent.

We have two 4.8kw and a 8kw fujitsus, new 2 yo models. The 4.8s do a hall and two bedrooms each and run great. The 8 does our open plan lounge kitchen dining and is struggling a bit tonight to maintain heat without cranking up the fan regularly but it is freezing cold tonight. I suspect it is slightly undersized for the area or not detecting the temperature properly due to ceiling height but it is a 3m ceiling with lots of large windows and a big area (75sqm) and was the biggest residential unit I could get at the time. Never noticed any of them have the defrosting problems described in two years.

Looking for a heat pump here, what was it about the Panasonic that made you change your mind?

Cranking up the indoor fan isn't a problem, it's just because it's cold outside and it's working moderately hard rather than idling along. It's when the outdoor unit ices up it's a problem. 8kw is a decent size, I think I have the same one, Nocria 8.6kw or something.

Those that have done the move from conventional (so to speak) heating to heating with a heatpump, what's your typical wintertime power bill rise? Ours only increases by at most $50 per mo. HP is on a timer to turn on at 5:15 pm and off at 7:20 am

When I first had my house, uninsulated and with conventional electric heating, I paid $350 - $450 / month and the place was horribly cold. Now in the middle of winter with a well insulated (but old) house and two heat pumps (one with limited use in the not often used kitchen/dining) I pay around $200 - $260 per month in winter and down to $120 in summer, with some light air conditioning use. I spent a fair bit on insulation though so it's not a fair comparison, I now have 20-30cm insulation in the ceiling (layers of wool, then pink batts, and some leftover under floor heating), walls insulation (holes drilled/not recommended), under floor, and plastic to prevent rising damp. The house is now very comfortable no matter what the weather, but on the coldest days it's still not as good as a new house.

^ pretty much exactly the same here. I had heard of some people ending paying more on their power but I suspect that this is from poor installs.

I read in consumer a lot of peoples power bills go up quite a bit, because instead of no to minimal heating they keep their house at 23 degrees 24/7.

COP/EER, star rating, reliability in reviews... the usual ;p

Heaps of installers on whirlpool talking about fujitsu too... wasn't good.

Ours will probably only do a month or so of heating, but heaps of cooling.

We have had our Dimplex heat pump in for about 4 years , Its quiet and very rarely goes into defrost even when its -5 outside. Got it at Harvey Norman on a deal they had going.

nathan, i've used all kinds of heatpumps. i think overall the mitsubishi was the best (lots of them around) followed by daikin (best heating but only a handful of service people i think). but they cost more.

the rest are all the same. someone mentioned 4 timers per 24 hrs - maybe look at features too?

Not to hijack the thread but we have a Fujitsu and it often goes through a defrost cycle in the mornings when it is frosty, sometimes two when it is trying to bring the room up to temperature, when it goes through a defrost cycle the indoor unit makes some interesting noises bit mainly a loud bubbling noise like a jug boiling followed by a high pitched whistle, this lasts about a minute during the defrost cycle, has anyone else seen this?
