I feel your pain, really the only way to choose a tradesperson is word of mouth I have found.

I have just had some trades people in today to do some work, they weren't who I choose as it was an insurance repair job so didn't have a choice. They rushed the job which means they are going to have to come back to redo part of it. Worst of all broke something and hid it in the cupboard and didn't let us know, hoping I wouldn't notice. Luckily I took photos before they started the job, so I have proof it wasn't damaged before they came. Pays to always take photos before you have trades people in.

I don't  know what has happened to the quality of tradespeople in NZ.

The thing that was so amazing, is that this has been going on for 4 or more months! In that time, even the most clueless person could LEARN to lay tiles (It's not brain surgery no offense), could have done the job and made reasonable money.

If you read the text messages, he would have spent 20 hours on them and what little work he actually did.

It is why I end up doing so much work myself. eg If you want it done well, you do it yourself. Tile laying IMO is something anyone can do, but it is finding the time to do it. Cost often doesn't come into it, because even high quotes doesn't mean you are going to get a better job, it may just mean bigger margins.

Unfortunately having had severe back issues since I was 11, bending over to lay 450x450mm tiles over 50m2 wouldn't work.

I did myself some harm recently waterblasting, and that just required a slight stoop for about an hour (I did it for about 8 hours in total).

So I thought I'd update you for those interested.

FOS Hardscapes mucked us around for about 11 weeks before we finally pulled the pin. We lodged complaints with the Police and Parole Board, and Fair Go and Disputes Tribunal.  We had our meeting with the DT on Friday and surprise neither Guy or Bryce Silcock turned up to the meeting to defend their indefensible actions/behaviour.

We got a ruling in our favour pretty much on the spot, and now we go through the pain of the debt collection, but given their history, getting people involved shouldn't be too difficult.

One of their subcontractors completed the work a few months ago, in 1 and a half days and whilst it's not perfect, it's a lot better than what it looked like before and after FOS Hardscapes laughable efforts.

I am just contemplating putting up a website to warn people against these people. Interestingly, it seems he was known in the DT.

Wow! The law is an ass when it doesn't do anything to protect you from rogues like this.

Seems like all the problems stem from making a deposit prior to work starting - must say that any tradesman I've ever hired has never charged a deposit up front. I guess this ensures that they complete the job in a timely manner so that they do get paid!

Mr Silcock is on Fair Go again tonight. 4th appearance on Fair Go in 4 years.

HAHA, Yeah, me and my dog are famous. Him more than me :)

Seems like finally, corrections are going to get off their butts and do something.

It's really now a case of trying to get the money awarded to us by the DT, back from them. Seems Bryce has done a runner.

If someone in your shoes wins their case, any money awarded should come from the tribunal/courts/etc, and it should be up to the judicial system to chase it up with the guilty party. With penalties for non payment, of course. It's the only way to stop punishing the victims.

Well, it seems quite a few people took him to the DT and won by default since he didn't show. A few decided to follow on from that and get the courts to chase the money. Silcocks were never found and company has been put into liquidation. It is impossible me to to see how this isn't criminal and shouldn't have been prosecuted.

At the end of the day, he can't hide behind a Limited Liability company any more.
