Can one switch to being a low user over summer to another company as a standard user over winter?

On reflection I dont think I would use Electric Kiwi, I think the hour of power is a gimmick

Even though EK quote their tariffs (in Switchme) are lower than others and an average discount of 9.9% based on the annual average Customer Hour of Power Savings you get a better deal with other suppliers with higher discounts even though the tariffs may be a little higher.

Meridian of course have no discounts but their tariffs are a lot lower compared to others.

I can imagine with EK trying to get everything done in that 1 hour to maximise your savings like bath/shower, Dishwasher, Washing machine etc.

I can hear the moans now about no water pressure or no hot water etc.

I think I would stick to those that have a reasonable tariff and good discount or very low tariff and no discount (like Meridian)

As for switching from Low User (Summer) to Standard User (Winter) you would have to ensure you are not on contract and have to pay penalty payments if you break the contract.

Also bear in mind your annual usage would need to be less than 8000 kWh in the north island and 9000 kWh in the south island (or is it parts of the south island)

Don't worry about that - there's no particular record saying that you are a low or high user. Provided you aren't under a contract, then yes you can switch suppliers to take advantage of low/normal user rates at different times of the year. Could potentially be some good savings if you know your usage profile and don't mind the hassle of switching.

Switching between low/normal tarriffs on the same retailer is more likely to trip you up - they often limit you to one change per year.

Well, I'm seeing a cost of $107 from my Mercury bill (low user) but I calculate their Everyday user charge would be $61.90.

And EK low user, loyal Kiwi would be $63. So, I guess i need to do something.

Where are you getting your figures for calculating your user charges for Mercury and EK?

How are you doing the calculation as the results should be similar to your bill.

I'm on Mercury low user at present. And my calculation is correct for that bill.

I got the rates from their websites, and bills I've been sent.

And created objects for each rate I'm familiar with here

Well, with a battery bank I could potentially charge from the grid for free, and at a discharge depth of 80% I could get 72kWh per week free.

It looks like your Daily Fixed Charge is for a Standard User but with Low User Usage charge.

Unless of course you have some other supply like Gas or Solar

I would query the issue with Mercury as something is not right.

There are numerous articles on line about the does and donts of Solar Energy.

It seems that some Lines Companies also want a slice of the "pie"

After all they are transporting your unused Solar Energy back to the supplier, someone has to pay for that.

I dont know if you can stop the Buy back and thus reduce your charges but still use Solar Energy during the day.

You should check with Mercury

Well, I don't know about transporting energy back to the supplier.  It's just fed back into the grid.

But yes, some suppliers are charging for that and others are not.  Check your bills.

Scotdownunder: Here is the link to my spreadsheet on github.

https://github.com/ scotdownunder / NZ-Power-comparisons

I just found time to download this at https://github.com/Scotdownunder/NZ-Power-comparisons/blob/master/NZ%20Power%20Comparisons%20v1.0.ods

But in my version of Excel, I see lots of #REF1 errors on the second tab.  Am I supposed to input a figure somewhere?

Oops,

revised version 1.1 now available on Github

Have removed the past usage figures which had been linked to my actual usage spreadsheet hence errors.  I note actual usage this year has been down, probably due to good weather and absences on holiday.  Looks like I will be changing gas supplier real soon.

Have added rows for discounts in usage / cost sheet.  Different suppliers offers may require change to calculation logic, e.g. fixed cash discount, free month etc.

Have added 5% extra discount for EV ownership to Nova electric (offer now discontinued but I talked them into it).

Corrected a few typo's.

Note this master file covers suppliers / tariffs in Lower Hutt.  Feel free to create a new version using you local tariffs, e.g. for Ak or CHC etc. or other suppliers and upload as side branch.

I took some of the data you had for some of the suppliers and added them to my list of suppliers.

I just need to jazz up the JavaScript a bit!
