We have our hour of power set from 6-7am, and everything goes on via the timers built into each appliance - that is ducted heatpump, electric car, washing machine, and the dishwasher; plus a convection heater on an external timer.

2tukapa1 - does your calculation of the one-year contract plan being cheaper than the stay ahead 200 include the 10% discount? It's just that the rates I saw were a bit cheaper, but would not lead to certainly anything like a 10% cheaper bill.

Question - do you all just use the built in delay start features on your appliances?

Wash the clothes at night, dry them at 5am using the drier's timer. Putting a timer on the hot water cost me about $250 but paid for itself in less than a year. Everything we have has ok timers, and will be a key feature requirement when we upgrade appliances.

By the way, Electric Kiwi are not providing a 10% discount. It is a "10% top-up bonus" which is equivalent a 9.09% discount.

Pay $200 and get free 10% = $20 bonus. So we paid $200 for $220 power. The discount is "discount value"/"undiscounted price" which is 20/220 = 9.09% and not 20/200 = 10%.

Yes, it's a matter of know thy appliance to make the most of the free hour.

A case in point - the timer on our washing machine (a relatively new Bosch) runs around 13 minutes early plus it only goes in hourly increments, meaning it needs to be started 10-15 past the hour (the usual cycle we use is an hour). I'll often set a timer on my watch to ensure I do it at approximately the right time!

Yeah, our older F&P drier runs about 15 minus early too.

Still bloody good. Last time I compared their rates I only had to use 6% of my power during my free hour of power to break even. I easily get more than 12% (yeah in winter I can bump up into the 30s or 40s... I just checked and managed 45% once, and an average of 14% since joining) and now another 9% from the topup bonus... excellent!

Totally agree. That additional 9% discount makes them the cheapest option for me.
