Empirical evidence suggests otherwise. 

 

Everything is a compromise between cost, performance, buildability, maintainability and repairability.

It’s easier for the water to just slide down the roof than to force its way into the nail hole.

pdh: Just go and travel round the UK (or Holland or Dalmatia)...

Many of those places have a tradition of steep pitched roofs. NZ tends to be on the lower side compared to many European countries. That doesn't help. Catering for longer snow and ice seasons is one reason.
