Spoke to my father about this during casual convo today. He suggested you use watered down Janola to wash the doors after they spray, then get un-diluted janola in a spray bottle and spray it all around the place, as much as 2 meters above ground level because they can spray quite high.
He says cats absolutely hate the smell of the ammonia in Janola, and that will help deter them, and if they do spray from afar, the spray of Janola will help mask the smell and stop it lingering.

I think you will find there is no ammonia in Janola

worth a try thanks. I have used handy andy to no effect. will do that with janola

Handy Andy is ammonia based and hence won't help for nitrogenous waste. Dilute janola (bleach) is a better option, although if you really want to neutralise the odor a commercial product is even better (as mentioned above).

I have found baking soda really good for the odour. Just trying to stop them spraying now.

Gilco2: I have found baking soda really good for the odour. Just trying to stop them spraying now.

I suspect part of the trouble is the cats recognising their scent - in order to stop this you need to completely neutralise the urine, not just mask the scent. Bleach and baking soda will go some way towards hiding the odour so that you may not be able to detect it, but they certainly still can!

Anyway, as mentioned I'd highly recommend Odarid - it has worked extremely well for me.

$53 for 2L from Odarid.co.nz; smaller quantities available on Trademe or Petpost.co.nz (~$23 for 500mL). Can't recall where I bought my supply, mind you.

In now way did I intend to suggest actually using the car product, rather tong in cheek as I thought people on this forum should be more intelligent than that. Thus said not to do it, and then suggesting an electric fence energizer. There are energizers on the market specifically for controlling pets in domestic gardens, and it is not cruel. I have touched a few fences myself, it hurts but is not cruel. I'm also aware of safety standards applied to those products, used in a home environment and likely to be touched by children. It is an effective behaviour change tool sold in NZ, and can be considered vital for urban vegetable gardens which you certainly do not want to contaminate with animal faeces.

Being married to someone who needs to go to the A&E whenever she comes near cat hair, with swollen eyes and throat, keeping cats away from our property is very important and not just a personal preference. I am also keen to hear what others have to say about cat control, stir conversation if possible, and clearly this is a real issue for many people as this thread is already spread across 5 pages with very little positive solution other than constantly throwing money at it.

I have deleted my post with reference to the poisonous product as I fully agree with and understand the concerns. It was in no way intended to be taken serious, but instead informative and to say not to leave the product outside as one easily could when doing a repair on the system involved.

well just finished tea and heard noise by front door. I rush and open the door and cat has sprayed again. Twice in 1 day. went around property but couldnt find the cat. Got a couple of 4 x 4 timber and contact paper. Peeled contact paper and laid out by front door sticky side up and held by the 4 x 4. Too bad if any people come to visit and stand on it

Hi all just an update. Problem with cats has been fixed and good entertainment watching them jump and flip at times. Very few cats come over now.
The fix was costly $184 for a Scarecrow Sprinkler from Easytek. Sprays the cats with water when in range of the motion sensor. Works on dogs too. Harmless to the animals but sure gives them a fright. So no more problem

Since this is Geekzone: I reckon there should be a cheaper-ish DIY option for this that could be cobbled up with an electronic sprinkler timer and a security PIR. Any ideas?

yes it is possible and I could have built one if I really wanted to BUT I couldnt build one in such a small and TIDY unit. This Scarecrow is the ideal solution
