deepthought: @sbiddle: think of Powershop as buying power the same way you buy petrol... you can see how much it is in c/kWh and you know exactly how much you get for your money - in that context it is actually pretty simple.

Can't say I agree with this statement.

If it were true then everybody would be paying different prices for petrol. Petrol heads would be getting petrol for cheaper than people who commute to work by bus/train.

Actually it does work quite well is you take car registration (Line charge) into account.
Two people with the same car, one travels 10000km the other 20000km then $/km would be different, assuming registration is $300 the the person who travels 10000km pays 1.5c/km more than the person who travels 20000km

But my point is we not all paying different prices for petrol at the pump.

Lucky, I only got to buy 10 units. Still, it's a good price.

One thing that I find a little bit annoying is the weekly power update email saying I used x amount of power this week. As I don't have a smart meter, those emails are just the average power they think I use and have no releation to the power used. I can probably turn them off, but, I don't see the point for non smart meter sites. If you do have a smart meter though, I can see they would be good.

@dolsen: you are correct, but the information can/will be more accurate if you enter your own meter readings. For most people this is pretty easy to do, and we encourage people to do so to help keep track of their usage, particularly in winer months.

Finally!! A breakdown of how much day and night units cost me!
That had always been a source of frustration for me since joining Powershop, not knowing if waiting until 9pm to put on the dishwasher was actually saving me any money (in future months).

Personally I would prefer to buy day units seperately from night units, so I get imediate and clear savings from shifting loads to night, rather than just influencing my future usage estimate and pricing.

@Skolink: we have considered the idea of separating day/night, controlled/uncontrolled etc, but on balance have preferred to stick with the simplicity of a single unit price, but also ensuring customers do benefit from lower off-peak and controlled rates.

Great explanations Ari. One feature I'd really like to see being implemented is an improved annual account summary. The monthly review is great but makes it too easy to react with a "OMG, my power this month cost me xyz!" and go off to look for something cheaper. The annual summary shows how much power was used over the year and it would be excellent if it also showed total cost, how many purchases were made and what packs/units were rolling into the next year.
Seeing the annual costs gives a much better indication of how things pan out with the seasonal variations and makes it much easier to compare when looking at power switch tools for example.

I know we can all throw our monthly review data into spreadsheets and do this ourselves but if it could be automated on your end this would be much better.

This is a great idea and I'd like to expand on it.

Perhaps in the monthly review we could get the current rolling average unit price over the last 12 months, as per: https://secure.powershop.co.nz/reports/monthly/unit_prices

Actually you do depending on where in NZ you are. So in more remote locations you can pay a lot more for fuel.
. This would probably be comparable to a low user. But personally I don't like their system, because we are meant to trying to save power, not be penalized per unit pricing for using less power. At least that is the way I read it from peoples figures.

All I know is that for the last three months, my average unit price (according to Powershop's reporting) is around $0.27. I try to log in and take advantage of specials as I can.

Powerswitch reckons Genesis or Energy Online could be cheaper for me (to the tune of up to $85 per year! Big deal!) but according to their websites, the unit price alone is nearly that. I'm sure when I was with Genesis, my average unit price was somewhere over $0.30.

I guess I can revisit sometime in future but I'm sure I can't save that much by going elsewhere.

Powershop specials only hang around for a limited time (sometimes as short as a few hours!) so you have to be quick to get them.

@Kraven: most specials are available for 48 hours, and very rarely less than 24 hours. Delays in notification sometimes mean the time between when you hear about a special and it's expiry can be shorter. We have developments underway to address this.
