Someone said you can pause a front loader and put more stuff in. Most you can't. You have too wait till the end of the 3.5 hrs of the cycle to put stuff in.
If it is taking 3.5 hours, there is something wrong with the washing machine, or it has some very long cycles. I think the longest cycle mine does is a couple of hours. I can also open mine at any time by turning the dial to the open setting, and then turning it back to where it was. But it is not advisable to add dirty clothes after the cycle has commenced, as you will be putting dirty in with partially clean. It is no different from dishwashers.
