isis: that's some serious runs!
i thought i'll start with 1x Box of 300M and see how i go...i'm going to go for Dynamix UTP Solid for about ~$200

In a standard single story house, every individual run will have somewhere around 4-5m just in the walls. 2 stories may be significantly more or slightly less.

Some tips
Don't skimp on cable length at the outlets or the panel. You want spare length to be able to work, and incase you need to re-terminate.

Don't run cables around loads of corners if you can avoid it. Try to make it so you can use it to pull another cable through in the future if you need something better or a cable fails. Running cables horizontally through walls is asking for trouble too. One day you'll decide you want to put a doorway in and...

Don't forget to number every cable on both ends as you run it, and make sure it still has a number on both ends of the cable after you terminate it.
When you terminate the panel try to do it in a sensible order

Honestly, 3-5k is probably a pretty reasonable quote. 30 rins is a lot, and cat6 is a pig to work with.

dolsen: I used this cheap stuff in my house. 2x 305M cat6e cable for $169.00

Cat6e doesn't exist. It's a made up term by people selling dodgy cable.

The cable does have the centre divider and the cables do seem thicker than the cat5e I also have (it's 23awg so it should be).

Both of which are features of Cat6. The next step up from Cat6 is Cat6A, which is thicker again.

I'm sure your 'Cat6e' cable is just normal Cat6. Nothing wrong with it, but it isn't anything more than Cat6.

I went onsite last weekend to start running my speaker cables. I did about 13x runs and took me about half a days worth of work.
Hardest part is probably drilling a godzillion holes through timber to run these through.

Lesson learnt - buy the best spade bit you can! I had an elcheapie and a good one! they make a difference!

I also got the extender bit and worked well, however you're constantly having to tighten the bolts on it. i think its best if you just purchases an extra long spade bit if you need the length.

This weekend will be the cat6 runs...

If you get the extender that is keyless, you _will_ lose a bit inside a wall.

Put a drop of medium to low strength Loctite on the threads to stop them vibrating loose.

An auger is much much better for pre-wiring. The only reason to use a spade bit is when doing long ones as yuo can get the 300mm spade bit.

The 300mm extenders are great but yes, make sure you do up the grub screws tight! They are good for one hole and then need tightening.

I use these ones - http://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/powertools/powertool_accessories/irwin_3_piece_speedbor_max_drill_bit_set_16_20_25mm_266402/

Awesome drills compared to spade bits or the chunkier augers. I did have one unwind a bit when it hit a giant bolt in the deck and I was driving it from my massive SDS drill with an immense amount of torque. Other than that they are pretty robust.

Completed 25 runs over the weekend.
The top floor is completed.
8 runs downstairs and my reel of 300m was over rover!

I have another ~20 runs to complete downstairs and put an order in for another 100m reel which hopefully will be enough!

Im glad i pre-drilled a number of holes last weekend which helped speed up the process.
I'll need to pick up another 25mm spade bit as the ones i had were munted when i hit a nail!

Went back on Sun to velcro and zip tie the connections.

its been a fun and rewarding experience and would definitely recommend you give it ago.

Nice work. Looking nice and tidy. Once you're totally finished it will be genuinely interesting to see what you think of the quotes you got.

I don't know the particulars of the job, but those cables look very short!

Being stingy on length will only cost you money in the long run. You can cut excess off, but you can't add it on.

I was going to say the same thing...he might have a hard time terminating them into a patch panel...

note how much cable is used to do it reasonably neatly

If the box is going right up then top it might be ok.  I put mine right up the top (cupboard has other purpose so I can't subvert).  Bit of a pain to work up there though...
