kiwikiwi:
Jeeves: kiwikiwi - just ask your power company to install a smart meter. They should do it for free (If they want to charge you, kick up a stink - most power companies do it for free).

Once done - get your half hourly figures or switch to a company that supplies them (like Flick) - then all your questions will be answered.

It will have to get approved by the landlord but I'm sure they won't mind.

The landlord doesn't own the meter but always good to let him or her know

The property you're in is originally a single house separated into two now? Each has its own meter of course. The problem with many of these split home type arrangements is that what's wired through each meter is not necessarily exactly what's in that part of the house. 30 odd kWH a day in winter isn't outrageous even though you have gas hot water. Faulty meters are very very rare and on the occasion they were, it was either as a result of something catastrophic like a lightning strike or from tampering. To get some detailed information about the usage, only an electrician measuring the load on every single appliance is going to really get to the bottom of your issue. Not enough has been yet to justify getting the meter tested. I'm assuming your last few bills are all actual readings too (sorry I haven't read every single reply). Good luck.
