I've thought that for a while about Gas BBQ's too though. Charcoal contributes to the flavour, the rest just recreates a hot plate outside.

I certainly wouldn't use a gas bbq inside, mine smokes like a beast and is very distinct from using a grill plate on the hobs or grilling in the oven. I have three options at home: gas, charcoal and wood. Each with their pros and cons. I probably use the gas one most during the week because its quick, but on a lazy day off, like today I'll fire up one of the others.

Yeah I have a gas hob inside and that is the reason I have had no BBQ for the last couple of years. Have decided that its too messy to be inside and the extractor fan doesn't work as well as it could!

Trying to figure out where to put my BBQ.
decided to check auckland council for guidelines.

Seems like you can only have a BBQ a minimum of 3m away from trees, property boundary, and buildings.

includes

which seems a little excessive. Most auckland properties would never be allowed a BBQ in that situation, and the ones that would need to have the BBQ slap bang in the middle of their lawn.

so is this just a rule that nobody bothers following?

I guess it might become an issue if you burn down your house or your neighbors house, and the insurance company goes after you personally.

There are 2 ranges of Qs

The ones sold at M10 etc have a low hood with no temperature gauge. The ones sold through specialist dealers cost more but have a higher top hood and a temperature gauge (they also cost more)

In saying that, even the high top ones look marginal as to whether a beer can chicken will fit.

There is a rotisserie kit available for the Q range - it comes with an extra metal panel you insert under the front of the hood to give you the extra room - looks like this when in use.

I have a weber baby q the one with the tenperature gauge and a more raised hood.

I usually use the weber trivet to cook a whole chicken on my bbq it comes out excellent , I have never tried the beer can chicken method sorry
