I've thought that for a while about Gas BBQ's too though. Charcoal contributes to the flavour, the rest just recreates a hot plate outside.
I certainly wouldn't use a gas bbq inside, mine smokes like a beast and is very distinct from using a grill plate on the hobs or grilling in the oven. I have three options at home: gas, charcoal and wood. Each with their pros and cons. I probably use the gas one most during the week because its quick, but on a lazy day off, like today I'll fire up one of the others.
