Been used a few times for cooling mainly. It has been quite warm for me to use the heater function so cant give any comments on it yet. I will report back in a months time.

Any updates?

Been using it for the past week for heating. It has been a life saver. Been working awesome. Heating the room up very quickly..

EDIT: let me know if there is anything in particular you want to know. I kinda wish the installers had explained how the remote timer works for the heat pump.

I had two Daikin fitted. Really happy. The one in the living area is 4x bigger than the previous one and heats up the large space much better. My electricity bill seems to be about the same. I like the fact that you can set it to come on at different times on different days during the week.

In general Heat pumps don't need servicing. Just clean the filter using a vacuum cleaner on the indoor unit, and keep the outside unit free of leaves etc

I've just bought a house which has a Panasonic heat pump installed in the living room. My initial observations are that it seems absolutely fine and does a great job heating the space it's in.

We now want to add a small unit in the bedroom. Is it worthwhile sticking with Panasonic for consistency, and convenience when servicing (i.e. to avoid potentially having to get two guys around instead of one)? Or should I just go for the best unit (of any brand) for the space?

Second question: would a 2.8kW unit such as this one be suitable for a small (approx 4x3 metres) bedroom?

A 2.5 kw will be fine for your bedroom. Go with Panasonic if you are happy with it but any reputable brand will be fine. I always recommend getting a couple of quotes then look at the indoor unit noise level and efficiency figures and price. Smaller heat pumps can be wired to power points as they only use about 700 watts. Personally I like to keep brands similar but thats personal preference. Try to locate indoor unit so it doesn't blow directly on you in bed so you don't get a draft.

Dont overspec a bedroom unit, as you have people and animals in there producing heat, there isnt as much need for it as cooling in summer. That is the one thing that I find annoying about aircons is that they have the same values prettymuch going both ways.

Ive stopped using the heatpump on the mild days because it even when throttled right back will overheat the room and then shut down for a while and start up again. There is only so much the inverters can do to drop output, not sure what the minimum output is, but I think its more than 300 watts on a 3.2kw system. The starting up and stopping is really annoying. On cold nights it stays running but sometimes the room can get uncomfortably warm - up to 25 degrees when it is set to 22.

On mild nights I just use the small oil column heater, its on about 20-30% of the time and at the other end of the room with something between it and the bed the clicking thermostat isnt too annoying. Overall usage is about 2kwh for the night, so not sure how that compares to the aircon running but its certainly more bareable.

In a bedroom, at night I'd set the temperature to about 18-19 degrees just to take the edge off.
There are some low capacity units available, for example Daikin have the Cora FTXM20Q 2.0 kw cooling and 2.7kw heating, the next size up FTXM25Q is 2.5kw cooling and 3.2kw heating. The inverter range is 0.9 kw - 4.3kw for the 20 and 0.9 kw to 5.3kw for the 25 so they do have the same minimum capacity and will cycle on and off at low load. Not many heat pumps run below 1 kw. Therefore its good not to oversize heat pumps so they ticking away with the compressor running slow.

I replaced a Fujitsu with a Mitsubishi GE50 this week. The old Fujitsu had broken down twice over the last five years. It was in the house when I bought it, so I can't comment on how old it was. It was starting to make the same fan motor noises it made the last time it broke.

My comment on the GE50 would be I can't believe how quiet it is! The outdoor unit is significantly larger than the Fujitsu but thats ok.

Thats a good decision, new units are more efficient, quieter and have a 5 year warranty. The GE50 is I think the only 5 kw heat pump available with the small 800mm wide indoor unit. The large outdoor is good for efficiency and noise, it means the unit doesn't have to work so hard to absorb the heat from the air. Did the installer replace the pipework or use the existing?

as wills1 said and has noted that his fujitsu was notably louder, its because they over spec their outdoor units, personally i have never liked fujitsu an never liked installing them, we would always talk a customer out of the fujitsu because of this fact

We chose between the Mitsubishi GE25 and the Panasonic Z12 both were similar power but the Panasonic was the more efficient and $200 cheaper so we chose that one.

We have no complaints, the unit is very fast to heat the room and our power usage is not much more than previous. I think $10-20 an month so far.

It could possibly be that the unit was old. "Over spec" what do you mean by this?

Ah yes, I just had a look at their website. I'm not that familiar with Fujitsus but have always been skeptical about their performance figures. Especially when you look at the size of their indoors and outdoor units when compared with the competition.
