deepthought: @Kraven: most specials are available for 48 hours, and very rarely less than 24 hours. Delays in notification sometimes mean the time between when you hear about a special and it's expiry can be shorter. We have developments underway to address this.

Email alert would be nice. Currently it only supports weekly usage, monthly update and low unit warnings.

deepthought: @Skolink: we have considered the idea of separating day/night, controlled/uncontrolled etc, but on balance have preferred to stick with the simplicity of a single unit price, but also ensuring customers do benefit from lower off-peak and controlled rates.

We have a smart meter... are you saying that if we shift usage into off peak our unit price will go down?

This depends on the configuration of your property and the network tariff you are on. If you look at the prices explained chart (http://secure.powershop.co.nz/prices/charts) you will see the components of your price. If there is a night rate showing, then yes you will benefit from shifting usage to off-peak.

We're in auckland and they tell me they are phasing out day/night rates in the auckland area... I thought it would be good to encourage people to use off peak power??

@polglase: I agree completely. It is the local lines company (Vector) that set the network pricing structure - I am not sure why they would want to phase this out - it encourages customers to use power at times when their network is not fully loaded. Most other areas in NZ are actively promoting day/night rates.

I believe electricity consumers in Wellington and Hutt Valley are going to be hit with another large increase in power pricing on 1 April 2013.
With Tranzpower hiking prices by another 10% and Wellington electricity hiking prices by 10%.
Max Bradford and his electricity reforms strike again. Not a good idea to have monopolies especially running essential services like electricity.
Perhaps powershop can comment.

@ajw: you are correct, electricity prices nationwide (not just Wellington and Kapiti) are likely to rise in April next year; the commerce commission approved Transpower revenue increases last November (see http://www.comcom.govt.nz/electricity-media-releases/detail/2011/commerce-commission-sets-revenues-for-transpower-for-the-three-years-from-mid-2012 for more detail).

I don't know that I'd put this increase down to the Bradford reforms. Transmission and distribution companies are recognised as monopoloies and their revenue is regulated by the Commerce Commission. This latest wave of cost increases are to recover what are essentially infrastructure upgrades. Personally I think these upgrades are beneficial to ensuring the ongoing reliability of the electricity system, and equally importantly to allow further development of renewable generation options; renewable generation by it's nature is not relocatable (whereas fossil generation often is).

To offset the increase in transmission and distribution costs, I would expect wholesale energy prices to be flat-to-declining as a result of softening demand as production slows in response to the slowing global economy.

We also encourage our customers to use the information and tools we provide to help reduce energy consumption to help keep power costs down.

Without raising the ire of fellow geekzoners what happened to all the millions of $$$ of revenue that has been collected over the years (since the Bradford reforms began) that should have been reinvested in keeping up this essential line maintenance. Under the last labour govts watch electricity prices increased by about 75% alone. 10+10 as I understand it equates to a 20% hike in electricity pricing on 1 April 2013 and does not include charges which could be added by the generators and retailers. While the country is in recession, electricity useage decreasing year after year and inflation running at about 3% I find it hard to accept price increases of this magnitude.
Perhaps you would like to comment.

@ruben999: we don't have any specials running at the moment, other than the monthly Simple Saver. We also generally run specials nationwide rather than regional.

This question may be a little off topic, but I've just joined Powershop and wanted to see if I understood the concept properly.

You have a standard rate and if you do nothing that's what you pay at the end of the month. During the month you can purchase units for a discounted rate which, depending on the offer, either count to this months units or are spread across future months.

In the meantime Im welcome to try different standard rates to see which works best for us.

Am I on the right track ?

Yes sounds like you are on the right track ...

However I would not recommend buying winter power now in advance (so called discounted rate).

As you have just joined powershop you don't yet have enough history yet. Therefore you probably have quiet a high cents/unit charge to your default price. And the packs you see on sale may be cheaper if you were to rather wait and buy later at the cents/unit rate determined by your actual usage.

Prices are determined by the following:
- Last months usage
- This months usage
- A prediction of next months usage.

I made the mistake once and bought plenty of power packs for winter for what I thought was a good deal. When winter came, my usage increased, I could buy the standard power for cheaper than the so called specials a few months earlier.

Stick with the specials that come up every now and again, but stay away from the winter/autumn specials etc, at least until you have a bit of a usage history.
