I replaced a Fujitsu with a Mitsubishi GE50 this week. The old Fujitsu had broken down twice over the last five years. It was in the house when I bought it, so I can't comment on how old it was. It was starting to make the same fan motor noises it made the last time it broke.

My comment on the GE50 would be I can't believe how quiet it is! The outdoor unit is significantly larger than the Fujitsu but thats ok.

Thats a good decision, new units are more efficient, quieter and have a 5 year warranty. The GE50 is I think the only 5 kw heat pump available with the small 800mm wide indoor unit. The large outdoor is good for efficiency and noise, it means the unit doesn't have to work so hard to absorb the heat from the air. Did the installer replace the pipework or use the existing?

Fujitsu premier go up to 7.2kw with a 790mm wide indoor unit

Ah yes, I just had a look at their website. I'm not that familiar with Fujitsus but have always been skeptical about their performance figures. Especially when you look at the size of their indoors and outdoor units when compared with the competition.

I can get you data to back it up if you wanted :P

The installer replaced the pipework. I'm really pleased. I've noticed I've had to drop the temp on the heat setting from 23 with the Fujitsu to 19 with the Mitsubishi. So I can only assume its more efficient. I don't imagine the Fujitsu would have been running at a near optimal level considering it was an older appliance.

I've used Fujitsu, lasted 7 years.

I've used Daikin and they are nice units that usually have the extra programming features.

My choice is Toshiba console though (edit: 6.something kw output). I don't like wall mounted unless you use a remote thermostat/control. A friend had a Tosh installed when they released the first inverters with the new gas and has been bullet proof for 5-6 years now I think. Can be a bit noisy when it cranks right up, but it does a good job staying really warm until it does a defrost (I live in Invercargill, where it freezes well). I found their defrost cycle on par with most quicker units and more often to prevent ice up.

I think all heat-pumps these days are inverter type with variable expansion valve?

On the Tosh inverters they allow you to set the max input power by changing the fan speed too. If you set the fan to the lowest setting the units inverter ramps right down saving on defrosts and noise when watching movies or leaving it on over night if you are more power consumption oriented than temperature control.

The only dislike I have with the Toshiba (probably changed since), their remote switches on and off the heat-pump when using a timer so it must be left within line of sight to the unit.

The old Fujitsu I had sent the current clock and timer info to the console unit so the remote didn't need to be in the same room to switch back on.

A Ducted Daikin would be nice in to a balanced air-to-air heat exchanger ventilation unit.
