I have a Roku 3 in the bedroom pugged directly into the TV via an HDMI cable. If I try to play a HD film with 5.1 sound on a USB stick or from my htpc media server the audio will not play. It just clicks once quietly and then nothing. I've tried changing the Roku settings between "stereo" and "surround" and it makes no difference. Any ideas? The firmware is up to date. Cheers

Ha, I noticed the exact same thing, I tried to play a video that I'd made encoded h264+ac3 (for which the Roku 3 is meant to support via passthrough to the TV over HDMI) and had no sound at all.

I also had no sound after reencoding it with AAC, oddly exact same file once I setup a Home Videos library in Plex played fine, I must check to see if Plex did any transcoding behind the scenes, but considering AAC didn't play, I think there is something funky with the Roku Media Centre app itself.

Yeah the rokus, especially via USB are pretty basic. They're design for streaming content mostly.
