Good morning,

Hello to all those Kiwi Unotelly users out there. Unotelly is an absolutely marvellous service. The dynamo servers enable users to receive channels from multiple countries on an array of different devices, all at the same time. With the dynamo service enabled on a device, you might have your Samsung Smart TV set up to receive British TV services, while your Sony PlayStation is logged in with a US account, and at the same time, your PC can stream video from several different countries depending on how you have configured the dynamo settings. There is also some content from Australia that is available by configuring dynamo for those selections.

When you have multiple devices on which you wish to receive services from different countries, one way to achieve this is to use the DNS number from a non-dynamo server. For example, you might have a Samsung TV and a Samsung Blu-Ray player. You want to receive services on the TV from the UK and services on the Blu-Ray from the USA. In the dynamo settings , you select the UK for the Samsung Smart Hub option, and enter the DNS number for the NZ based dynamo server in your TV's network settings. On the Samsung Blu-Ray player, you select a non-dynamo server from the USA and use that DNS number in your Blu-Ray network settings to allow you to stream content from the USA.

There is one glaring omission in the Unotelly offerings: they need a non-dynamo server in Australia. There are so many excellent English language TV channels in OZ, such as ABC, SBS, Channel 11, Channel 7 etc. In fact, there are more totally free English language streaming TV app services for smart devices that are configured for use in Australia, than there are for those configured for use in the USA. It is a no-brainer to offer a non-dynamo server in Australia. It is very easy to reconfigure a smart TV or smart enabled Blu-Ray player to download all the OZ video apps, but without an Australian based non-dynamo server, those Oz apps won't stream any video.

Hmm not sure anybody over here is really chomping at the bit to have those services. Most of it would surely just be regurgitated US / UK stuff that we might as well just get from the source?

It seems that you might be right in that I may have misjudged public enthusiasm on this topic.

Did you ever receive SBS when it was available via Optus D1?

There really was a great deal of excellent content there. Locally produced Australian documentaries and films, very good foreign films, and a news service that had a much more comprehensive coverage of international events than anything we have in NZ. Then of course there is free to air sport. The documentaries available via SBS are generally of a good intellectual standard, much better than the low-brow offerings from Sky. Then there is ABC, which is similar; lots of good local Oz content and quality imports from US and UK. Freeview in NZ is like the poor cousin of Freeview in Australia. Our free to air TV content is somewhat limited and more low-brow compared to theirs. They have a vastly larger budget.

If one has multiple smart devices, having the option to configure one of them to receive Australian content is a good idea. More variety and more choice.

Tim,

You have to remember that SBS and ABC are Australian taxpayer funded services so I imagine the Australian Government wouldn't be too happy if people here get access without contributing anything to the running costs.

So is BBC iplayer content and some of the other areas that the geo-unblockers open up.

Yes, that is indeed true. Those services are intended for coverage inside the country of origin only. This is the same for the services from the UK such as BBC iPlayer, ITV, 4OD, Channel 5, BBC News, and also the services from the USA that people receive in NZ, like Netflix and Hulu. Officially, these services are not intended for consumption in NZ, but there are 1000s of people here using these services, and many of these folks use Geekzone forums.

Basically, anyone using a DNS service like Unotelly or UnblockUS is gaining access to streaming video content that is normally geographically constrained. Services from Australia are in the same category. So if someone is already using a service like Unotelly or Unblockus, it shows they are not too concerned about gaining access to content that is supposed to be geographically constrained.
