EDITED: I think the main thing I need to know is if I need to do some kind of factory reset on it, or upgrade the firmware, now that it is on a "ÜS" connection. (tried a network update, but of course its already up to date)

This is the closest I have come to an answer, but couldn't get it to work. (grrrrr) Maybe it may help you?
http://support.unblock-us.com/customer/portal/questions/212881-netflix-not-working-on-sony-bdp-s48-bluray-player
I only just attached the player to a Sony account yesterday as I really object to the idea of it ;)
No luck. I still haven't managed to get netflix to come up in the menu, it is still all the dreadful nz items.
Earbanean: We have set up Netflix, Amazon Instant etc on both those players. The trick is you have to register your blu-ray on a Sony website first.
First step is to set up geo-unblocking using Unblock-US, dns4Me, Unotelly etc. I assume you already have this done.
Second step is to enable the internet content. I can't remember exact steps, but you click Home (blue) button, then under Video menu slect "Internet Content". If this is first time it gives you a registration code. Then on your computer go to sonyentertainmentnetwork.com and if your first time, create a new account. Register your blu-ray player and enter the registration code.
I think you then just restart the blu-ray, click on Internet Content and it will populate all the services, like Netflix.
Thank you for trying to help! I will report back.
Went into sony, activated the device. That went fine.
Went into the play, to video, (there are not internet options under video at this point) then I enabled the internet options.
It would be such a waste if I end up having to replace it because I am too daft to make it work!
