This is somewhat related to another thread I just posted, but what the heck, here I go.

If I have Orcon as my ISP, and so Global Mode is automatically turned ON,

does it mean I have to mess around with changing DNS etc if I buy a chromecast to stream from my phone to my Samsung Smart tV?

I thought if someone had global mode with Orcon they didn't need to do anything with DNS.

I am not an Orcon/global mode customer, but I do have Unotelly.

The chromecast is hardwired to use the google DNS servers - so consequently will 'know' where it really is - so will always believe its in NZ.
Consequently, if you tried casting something that is geo blocked - it will not work.

The way around this is to set up a 'static route' in your router that blocks requests to the google DNS servers '8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4'.
If the chromecast cant access these servers they will fall back to whatever your internet connection uses by default - in your case global mode.
It will then be fooled by global mode just like anything else you might be using.

Just as a BTW.

This works for me with my Genius until I restart it for any reason. The static routes are still set up but no longer function. Don't know if this is a fault with my Genius or a problem with them in general. It is a Genius black. Would be interested to know if you have the same issue.

Easy to test yourself if you have a windows PC.
Open the dos cmd shell (start button/type cmd and press enter)

Type ping 8.8.8.8
It should fail.
Type 8.8.4.4
That should fail as well - proving googles DNS servers are blocked.
If they respond then the static routes are not working.

Thanks yes that's how I figured out what was going on. The pings fail until the router is restarted then they work after that. Looking in the settings the static routes are still there just apparently not working anymore. Very frustrating

Pretty sure there are a few posts on gz about this router. Have a poke about. There is bound to be an answer...

With Orcon Global mode, you don't need to block 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4

Google Chomecast should work out of the box.

I have orcon and a chromecast I'm pretty sure i had to block 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 so i could use unblockus and change region but US worked out of the box

Yes, if you are not using Orcon global mode but another DNS provider you will need to block those ranges.

but if you are using Orcon Global mode you don't need to.
