Must have been a temporary thing, I can't see it here. You're not on an ISP that has a "global" mode are you?

I bet.. Netflix may not be offering content as a NZ Provider..
As such.. it comes from US offerings...

i.e. they are getting around any NZ Licensing, and I bet they offer in US dollars as well..

So technically we buy US content.. and are technically parallel importing

They can't get around global rights that easily, you will soon see how crippled their launch catalogue is compared to US/UK offerings. That being said they look the other way with people using VPN or DNS based solutions to access their other markets and make no attempts to block it.

It turned up on my dad's tv a couple of months ago (panasonic). looks like they jumped the gun as it's been removed, likely to be added again very soon.

Not working here - I get the usual message "not available in your region."

Not true - for example, they do use public DNS lookups encoded into their app on various players (e.g. Roku) to attempt to geolocate users who are "out of region". And it is actually pretty difficult technically to totally block VPNs, and morally questionable to even try, given the very legitimate uses of VPNs in the countries of origin where Netflix operates.
