With that Apple streaming service just around the corner I thought I'd share what I use, why, and how etc.

Lets start with that "list" that has been circling the internet:

(click this to go full or go over to this Engadget Article)

So as we can see here you know that Apple Music looks shiny because Apple says it is shiny but I am not going to accept that.

For me,
1) I use Android
2) I use Linux / OSX / Windows / ChromeOS depending what device I pick up.
3) I work - I use Linux at work and like my music at work.
4) I care about quality of music, not about the quality of the app.
5) I don't care about all that marketing BS.

This is why I use Google Play Music + Pandora, why am I a madman?

Well,

1) it works well with Linux because browser based FTW.
2) it works well with Android, OSX, ChromeOS, my Chromecasts etc.
3) It is the same? price as Spotify.

And, it also features something else - the ability to upload 50,000 songs to "cloud storage" which brings me to the following:

Now I sometimes don't like having to pick music and frankly, the radio feature on Google Play Music is rather horrible (often mixing Miley Cyrus in with my Taylor Swift) so to combat this I use Pandora One on the side which is especially good during those busy "leave me alone" moments at work and again - works well with my phone and other devices.

What are your picks?

I still use rdio. It was the first I tried and seems the least crash prone in the apps.

Google play music app constantly crashes while navigating it, even tho it is faster and prettier than rdio. I liked how google play would download stations when on wifi instead of streaming. Driving around eats up too much data to be streaming in good quality, and when I was on 2 degrees it often couldnt keep up with it because of how slow it was.

Spotify I avoided initially when it was facebook login only. When they had the free spark plan that got it, I had it too, but found it not as easy to use, and way laggier with a few 1000 tracks downloaded, Couldnt choose what to download from the PC, had to do it on the phone, which I am seldom using and thinking about music when on wifi.

Pandora was ok when I gave it a shot, but again, not being able to download a whole lot of random stuff to listen to and then have it go away later like google play does is what killed it for me.

So I have rdio, and google play subs. Also use one from china that has a different collection but occasionally throws an error that flatmate translated as being about rights holder says not available outside china. Never mind, VPN sorts that. Good thing with QQ is that it just downloads low quality MP3 files so you can play them in whatever, whereas the others are all DRM'ed up the wazoo.

Happy Spotify user

I don't really Stream music as 'cache' it to listen offline as I like to during commutes and Spotify premium works well here.

I also have rather obscure music tastes (accoustic bossa nova anyone?) and Spotify seems to always find what I desire

I did try google play music but it doesn't have the depth of genres and I did not like the UI

Use to pandora then shifted to rdio when it launched, then shifted to google play music.  I use google for everything so easy to keep it all in one place.

I stream most of the time, sync my thumbs up to phone and listen to that in the car.  At home I play it via sonos, love being able to listen to music in car, then hit stream (want to automate this) to then play same music on house hifi system so it doesnt stop (well does pause for a ~5 seconds).

Most of what I listen to is artist "radio stations".  I like it mixing in different artists/songs that I never heard of.

I would stream in car if mobile bandwidth wasn't so expensive.... I have occasionally done this but always worried I would go over my data cap if I did this daily.

Pandora One for me too. I'm normally on wifi/wired Internet, and if I'm not, 3/4G packages are cheap enough now for me to listen on the ferry etc.
On the other hand, LastFM is uncannily accurate at serving up stuff I like. Most services try to match the kind of music, or artist you like, but LastFM compare tracks you like, with tracks that other people play (either online or their own music) "Scrobbling". So apparently there are a few others out there that like rocksteady with a bit of UK punk, Deep Purple, Bach and trance. It really works.

The only thing that put me off them, was that in browsers they now tie their tracks in with YouTube videos, and the android app won't play in NZ, and their iPad iOS browser page needs flash. Pity.

I use Spotify and happy with it, I am not sure I am happy with Apple's entry and their possible influence on content providers.

Spotify Premium and Pandora in our household.

Really like them both and have no interest in checking out other options.

I use Spotify for random streaming, I Heart Radio for "live radio" and my iTunes library of 7000 songs when I want to listen offline.

Google Play, Pandora One, Radio Paradise. Mainly listen via Sonos, or via phone/bluetooth.

If you haven't discovered Radio Paradise, I highly recommend it. 24 hours of streaming music, no station choice, they pick the playlist, but they know their music. During the day, we basically have Paradise playing constantly in the background. Can listen via web or ios/android app. Can even cache up to 12 hours music in app for offline listening, though not something I have required to date.

I have used Spotify and Google, probably preferred the the paid spotify compared to the paid Google option however these days i use Google's free option, i have uploaded 20,000 odd songs so far (50,000 limit) against a family gmail account, most ripped from CD in 320kb , all the family can sync that acct and can create playlists, pin tracks locally to devices, works on iOS/AOS/Windows through a browser, simple, free and effective, only downside is I need to find new music to add to my list but that is a minor issue as uploading new music is literally drop and drag

I use a mixture of Spotify Premium and iTunes. If I can have all my music in one app then I'd be happy so will be giving Apples new toy a go. Didn't know Spotify did any video content like the chart says.

I have been using Milk recently which is quite good, as well as pandora, which is really simple. Spotify also seems to come up with good music. I did used to use googles one, but found it clunky and not that nice to use.

they just started this month I think

We use Spotify almost exclusively for a our music at home. since my wife cares about music more than me she also downloads her spotify play lists to her iPhone to save on data.

As for the apple stuff I might have an iPhone but I hate them (various reasons involving their stuff not playing nice with my other stuff) so will not be bothering to try their new service.

Spotify's mobile app likes to randomly stop playing.

Google's browser music app thing likes to skip/pause/hiccup after a few seconds when playing a new song sometimes.

It's for these reasons I've yet to subscribe to a monthly music service. Keen to trial Apple's music thing soon.
