My sister lives in America and subscribes to one of the cable services there. With my DNS proxy, Fox.com will let me watch my favourite shows if I sign in with any US cable or other TV distribution account (some other sites also do this). My sister would have no problem letting me use her account for this purpose as long as she could be assured there would be no repercussions for her. I also would want to be certain this could not cause her any problems. Can anyone provide any insight into doing something like this?

worst case your sister just claims she has no idea and someone must have her password.

The most the provider can do is cancel her account - but I doubt it.

I have a sub account with Verizon Fios . I have been using it for my Roku and Fire TV for about a year now with no repercussions for the main account holder.

umm,
using goods and services you didnt pay for and have no right to access:
her letting others, in other contries, view movies & TV using her a/c
her knowingly giving you the password to the a/c

you both know it wont be allowed under the terms & conditions...so
fraud ? theft ? piracy ?

It could go very badly IF caught & they decide to make an example out of her.

That is part of the question. The goods and services are being paid by her so I don't see how it could be called piracy or theft. The principle has already been established that overseas use of dns proxies and vpns is not illegal so that also rules out fraud. It might well be a violation of t&c, but that would depend on what those were. Possibly they haven't caught up with this kind of thing yet.

Breaking terms and conditions. Big deal. Whats the penalties in the T&Cs? Usually just account closure.

They dont do that, because closing accounts isn't good for profitability.

Sky are not running around cancelling peoples accounts that share a multiroom. Netflix and HBO know that it happens.

Um, really? You are not the account holder, you don't live with the account holder (plus you do not reside in the country the service is being delivered to). So how can you not see that it is piracy/theft! And the fact that you are using it and are not the account holder very much makes it fraud.

I'm not against people being able to get a service that is meant for a different jurisdiction, as I think we get a very raw deal from many companies because we are not the US.

But I don't think it should be leached off someone else’s account. Find a way to have your own account, if possible.

My sister just checked with her provider and they say they have no problem with this at all. She told them where I am, what I want to do, and also had the person she talked with double-check with a supervisor. Absolutely no problem whatsoever and no violation of their t&c. I guess that isn't really so surprising, since they are already being paid for access and this doesn't really affect them either way. Anyway, it's good to know. Once she can find her ID and password I will give it a try.

In that case, since the service provider has OK'ed it, go for it.

Your sister should try to get it in writing to avoid any issues down the track and to protect herself.

Not sure, I tried it tonight and it looked like the login was accepted but then I immediately got an undefined error. It could probably see from my IP that I wasn't actually in the US. I would have been surprised if it did work. I will play with it later and see if I get any further.
