Amazon is launching a month-to-month Amazon Prime Video subscription service. It covers video (TV/movies) only - no shipping and other benefits from Amazon Prime but you pay on a monthly basis, instead of having to pay a full year membership.

Its main idea is really to be a Hulu/Netflix competitor.

Hope it's promising. Annoyed with Netflix's block, much NZ content is rubbish, and I don't want to have to go to Soho

I signed up to the UK version (because I have a UK bank account) a week or so ago. I didn't realise it was new. Good move on Amazon's part. I'd be nervous signing up for anything for a year at the moment.

I like how it includes offline use - great for going on holiday or on the yacht where bandwidth is more limited

I wonder if they will play the same games as Netflix re unblocking? Amazon are traditionally quite strict on what they will sell to where

Mind you for download/offline use you need a VPN. To playback the do downloaded content you don't even need to be connected but if you are then you don't need a VPN.

To stream you need either a VPN or DNS redirect service.

Well i have just setup my firetv again and have a dns service running (vpn on ipad/phone) and have to say I am very happy with it, it's fast and looks great

This might win me over ditch netflix

I share my daughter's Prime account (family sharing plan) so Prime Video is free for me. I guess that's why she bought me a Firestick for Xmas :-)

Do you need to have the device which you're going to be using offline VPNd, or could you VPN a PC and transfer the downloaded content?

I've never VPNd a tablet but I guess "There's an app for that"

I was able to download a Prime video just using a DNS redirect service - no VPN. And then of course once downloaded I was able to watch with the phone in Flight mode - not data connection at all. The viewing period was 30 days after which I would have to download it again.
