This announcement has been mentioned in other topics but I thought I would start a dedicated topic.

Star Trek: Discovery

This Netflix original will be released on September 25, 2017. It purports to follow the adventures of the crew of the USS Discovery ten years prior to the original 60's Star Trek and its crew of the USS Enterprise.

So far they have made 15 episodes divided into two chapters.

Trailers can be viewed here: https://www.netflix.com/title/80126024

I have been a fan of the Star Trek franchise but not a Trekkie per se. So I am looking forward to this new TV series. It will be interesting to see what technology they had 10 years prior to Spook & James T. Kirk.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Looks good enough to give a 5 episode inspection a crack. Thanks for the heads up. I don't like any ST other than the original so far, but I generally like SciFi so long as it's not too far out.

We have just finished Voyager, and after a slow start loved it. It will be great to have something new to watch.

The original rocked. When it came out on Jones, I watched one, but alas, it didn't last 5 minutes. The 3 sets of shadows on the rock on a planet was enough!

When I watched others in the franchise later on, I wasn't keen, but they grow on you to be awesome

Growing up in Australia they used to put Star Trek Voyager and DS9 on at 11pm so I used to stay up on school nights and watch it, I'd also tape it on VHS and watch it again the next day. I'm a huge fan of all things Star Trek (Trekky nerd is accurate) but this series has me worried due to the changes in showrunners. It doesn't sound like Fuller was pushed out but I'm a fan of Dead Like Me (the first season anyway), Wonderfalls and American Gods so when I first saw his name attached to this I got very excited.

Have you taken a squizz at Dark Matter and Kill Joys both are quite good SciFi space

And The Expanse. If ever there was a SiFi series to rave about its that one. Utterly magnificent in every episode. Even watching it a 2nd time just emphasized the quality of the effects.

Stargate was the last SCIFI series I watched that I enjoyed, I think I managed about 3 seasons of that. BattleStar was good, but it didn't hold my interest past S2.

Have to agree about Expanse. One of the best SciFi shows in years.

I am looking forward to this, I am a trekkie fan since a long time ago, however I decided that the original series is best left as a fond memory in the mists of time.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Netflixing my way through Voyager S1 at present. 22-25ep run seasons take a while!

Still got DS9 and Enterprise in the playlist. Probably be removed by the time I get to them

The Expanse, Colony, Travelers, 12 monkeys, continuum, and even timeless (for a bit of fun) are all recent sci-fi shows I have enjoyed a lot.

will be watching the new trek show. I found enterprise started great, got better, then got worse....it was the only trek show i didn't like so much as putting something in the past seemed to limit possibilities.

 edited for typo

Absolutely agree - greet series - haven't read the books though

The books are excellent and definitely worth a read, the series has been reasonably faithful to the books - it probably helps that the two authors are on the series writing staff.

Dark Matter is also good, I keep meaning to watch Continuum but just never got around to it. Two of my favourite series recently have been Westworld and Legion, both not hard core scifi though. The 5 part "Mars" miniseries from last year was also enjoyable, it was part documentary and part drama about the first Mars colonists. People of Earth was also good, it was a comedy about a bunch of alien abductees who form a support group (it's much better than it sounds and definitely scifi).

Star Trek; The Next Generation was the same. We had fond memories of watching it on Friday nights with fish & chips and a beer.....and so we watched it years later from the start....and the whole first season was largely forgettable.......and it wasn't until half way through the second season it started to really take off.......and they have a long run....so by the end of it we'd long forgotten the first season and a bit. :-)

Voyager is the same......
