Since TVNZ Ondemand has a proven online service..  Could they bid for Rugby Rights?

They could sell ondemand (live) video of rugby, and onsell rights to SkyTV and other providers?

At least they have the skills with cameras and broadcasting...

I would doubt they have the money.

This is sort of the direction the 'sky losing subscribers in droves' thread eventually railroaded too.

Short of buying out skys OSB or getting their own If Amazon is sniffing, would it potentially be sourcing from OSB and then offering its proven platform for a streaming format, or geo limit to overseas if there was the interest.

So many questions, so many dollar signs on any outcome.

They can raise the money if they bought the rights. If the purpose of this thread was to reduce sport subscriber fees, that wont work, unless Rugby drops their rights expectations. I doubt Sky would buy sub rights off TVNZ as there is no motivation for customers to obtain or keep Sky if its elsewhere as well. Sky may then be forced to outbid TVNZ, then we all lose, except for NZR, SANZAR etc who get more of our money for us to watch the same content

They would need to do something about their resolution first.  Highly variable, often poor compared to Netlfix, SkyGo or Neon on the same connection.

Just to throw another possibility out there.

Didn't Winston say something a while back that Rugby should be free to air.  That tied to Labour (Jacinda) talking about a Radio NZ TV channel could be a possibility.
I'm not saying its likely to happen (way to many costs such as camera coverage, commercial rights,  etc) but its still another option.

Proven?  Maybe 5 years ago.  It's been seriously lagging behind the rest since.

They've only just in the past few months gone on to chromecast.  No apple tv 4 app, Fire TV? Nope, they are both IOS and android now, but it took a long time to come ot android as Samsung had the rights.

You'd hope if they did decide to go over some big name event they'd bring their technology up to scratch.

Costs aren't an issue as these are borne now. Will enough rugby fans pay the fee that gives a return on the investment? How many people at how many $ per month?

The big stumbling block they had was a payment model through Free to Air is impossible..

If TVNZ.. gets ATV4 version.. adding a payment model to TVNZ on demand is not a huge stretch..

And they can do a delayed coverage..

And they could sell rights to SkyTV, but price in way that encourages people to use TVNZ on demand..

So I see 3-4 players, Amazon, SkyTV, TVNZ, maybe even TV3

I actually feel some sadness for Sky and their imploding business model. It's a model fuelled by viewers that's suddenly no longer trendy.

As for TVNZ getting rugby - how do you expect them to fund the (unknown) but assumed figure that Sky pay the NZ rugby idiom which is in the tens of millions each year?
