YouTube has become an absolute nightmare for me. The user interface seems designed to be as awkward as possible. I keep running into obstacles that just don’t seem to make sense. I really hate what they have done with this but I still want to be able to use it if I can. I have lots of frustrations and lots of questions, but will keep it to just a few things to start.

First, is there a decent third-party interface that works better than the mess Google has imposed on us? I have looked at a few but can’t find anything that addresses my issues. I have many issues, but will confine myself for the moment to the Home page. I am using both Android and Android TV. The problems are the same with both.

When YouTube first starts you see rows of video thumbnails to the right and a red column of categories to the left. If you click on the ‘Home’ category you see the same thing, except the screen moves right and the categories are obscured. The heading also changes from ÝouTube’ to ‘Home’.

My first issue is with those rows of video thumbnails. YouTube fills that with random crap I don’t want and have never clicked on. My subscriptions are also there, but they are mixed in with all the crap, making them hard to find. I would like to be able to remove the crap and prevent it from returning, but YouTube offers no way I can find to do so. I have turned off recommendations and disabled notifications but I still get all this arbitrary rubbish I don’t want.

If I click on the next category, ‘Subscriptions’, I get a single endless horizontal row of random videos from my different subscription categoies, but there seems to be no particular order to them and no way to arrange them. I do not see the point of this. It is calculated to be as useless as possible. Also, if I scroll them to the right, I have to scroll al the way back before I can access the categories column again. It feels like YouTube is stuck in 1995.

There are some more categories and then I come to the list of my subscriptions. They are not alphabetical. The order cannot be changed. It is a long list and there is no way to jump up or down it. You can only scroll through it an item at a time. It also doesn’t loop back to the top when you reach the end. You have to scroll back through it an item at a time. Again it feels like 1995.

There is much more, but this will do for starters. Am I missing something or is the YouTube interface really as unbelievably bad as it seems? What is the logic behind this nonsense? Can anyone help me?

Edit: To be clear, I am talking about Android here. Most of the problems don't exist on the Windows browser, but the Android apps almost seem broken.

Agree about the Android version of Youtube. Can't help sorry, I am barely able to  use it at all. It took me a while to realise that you swipe a video away to stop it playing!

Most of my Youtube watching these days is done on an Nvidia Shield (Android TV) using my Harmony remote. I find using the 'back' button on the remote very useful for returning back to the top of a list or back from within my subscriptions to home without having to scroll. I don't know if your interface has a back or return button but it makes the current interface much more usable.

Enabling notifications for a subscription *seems* to ensure that new videos in that subscription make it into the first list on the first screen based on my observations.

You could try mass enabling notifications on you subscriptions to fill that first row with stuff you actually want to see?

So is mine and that is precisely where my problem is. YouTube on the Shield (or any Android variant) is a complete mess. It amazes me that Google could have come up with something so useless. I took another look at YouTube on Windows and there it is fine. The Android versions really are broken.

The reason I disabled notifications was because of all the crap. That was the recommended fix. But it doesn't seem to make any difference either way. As far as I can tell, Android is mainly ignoring any settings changes I do make. I don't get the useless 'recommendations' on the Shield screen but I still get all the rubbish when I open YouTube.

What I really want is not to have clutter I didn't ask for. I don't understand why that is so hard.

The thing that annoys me the most is that when I play a video, YouTube automatically creates a queue of all my 'watch later' films and tries auto plays them after the video, when all I wanted to do was just watch the single video. I have turned off autoplay, but this does not seem to make any difference. The Google model is that they want you to spend as much time as possible on the site, so everything they do is geared toward this.

God this is frustrating. I found a new app that seems to answer most if not all of my issues but the #$%!@# thing won't vertically scroll correctly. It jumps to the top or bottom of my subscription list, skipping over everything in-between. I assume this is a touchscreen matter. Why the hell can't they just include a physical button on these damned phone apps?

Which leads to my next question: Is there any app that lets you emulate touchscreen commands on an Android box with the remote or a keyboard?

I am using Android 6.0 for tests. The Android TV is in another room and is a pain to experiment on. The app I found is the latest official one in Playstore, version 13.17.55. It has everything the others don't, except for the stupid scrolling problem. I don't know if it would work the same, or better, or at all  on Android TV with the BT remote. I might give it a try but I don't have the remote at the moment. It is being replaced.

Small breakthrough! I discovered that scrolling will work correctly if I hold the left mouse button down on a usb keyboard and scroll with the trackpad. It is a solution, sort of, but ridiculous that you have to do this sort of thing. No way will I ever let Google drive my car or make my doctor's appointments!

Looking further into this it is also a useless piece of crap. Awkward navigation, unintuitive functions, stuffed with advertising. No thanks.
