I am completely new to all this. So bear with me please :)

I am looking at using MiBox, something that I see people using alot here as is Kodi.

So what I am wondering is;
If you are using these two, are there costs/subscriptions involved if you want to watch content and would you need a VPN?
I read a thing or two but can't seem to find the info that answers this.

Kodi is a video player, a nice one that keeps track of what you've watched. I think most people stream content off their network hard drives, though you can also watch public TV on them.

There are likely to be ways of watching illegal content with Kodi, but I don't know what they are.

Depends what you ant to do with it. I dont need a vpn as I am currently using Kodi for fanpass, spark sports (I have subscribed) and NZ ondemand content only. These are NZ services so a vpn is not required.

I have been toying with the idea of trying out Australian Kayosports. You will need a vpn with an australian IP address for that. I did try to signup to Kayo sports but only got as far as where it asked for my australian mobile number. I probably need to get hold of a friend or family member in Aus to help me out.

As well as NZ public TV I can get Australian public TV on Kodi, using the Matt Huisman plugins. I assume it's legal as it's free to air, but in practice I've never actually watched it.

Kodi is just a way to access different services and files. If the service you want to watch is geoblocked (eg Kayo Sports) you will need to get around this. The two main ways are VPN or DNS, both of which cost money.

On top of this if the service you want to use has an ongoing cost then you pay this.

Eg. Kayosports - AUD$25 a month

VPN: ~USD$100 a year

Each addiional service you use costs whatever they charge. You don't get Netflix for free on Kodi although as others have said there are pirate services around which are illegal and often disappear

as long as you are using the latest Kodi (18) you can use it to stream Netflix and Amazon Prime (legally) - although if you have a MiBox it might just be easier to use the android app for those services.
