Same stream. Coming into iPad, then iPad to Apple TV.
Edit spelling.

No it isn't. AppleTV sets up another stream coming from source (CDN media server).

But isn’t my iPad the source. Explain what you mean please, as I don’t follow.

No. Airplay doesn't work how you think it does.

“No”. You don’t want to explain or no, my iPad is not the source?

The iPad is not the source, as I stated the AppleTV sets up another stream from the source. This is how airplay (and chromecast) works.

I have to use a VPN on my iPad. How does the Apple TV circumnavigate that?
Up until a couple of days ago, the iPad stream was perfect now its awful.

Probably your VPN or potentially your Wi-Fi.

When you try and cast something using Airplay or Chromecast it simply discovers the streaming device via mDNS and essentially sends the URL to the device for streaming.

It does not stream via the phone or tablet like most people assume.

Except/unless it’s ‘streaming’ downloaded content. My ATV(3) ‘streams’ netflix from my iPhone XR+ with no internet connectivity at all (bus/Motorhome in a valley without even 2g signal)

So while it will set up its own ‘stream’ when it can/wants to, it DOES default to direct from device when it can’t 👍
