It's coming to NZ, but I really wish Apple, or whoever, would get the licensing rights sorted in NZ for streaming TV shows. Plenty of legal ways to stream\watch\rent movies here already.

Anyone know if Netflix puts ads in their streamed TV shows incidently?

hook up a VPN and you can stream content from US. would be interesting to see if people can get the new device to playback 'other' file formats. cant say for netflix but hulu does contain ads albeit some hilarious

yeah the new version will be crippled in nz, unless they partner with tv3/tvnz on demand.

the old model, you just hacked it and put xbmc on it, and you had all your videos on your network, PVR through mythtv and all the movies from iTunes.

im really annoyed you can't purchase a movie. some movies are $7-$10, and i watch some of these multiple times (kids love them), and now I will have to pay each time i want to watch it. hmm, pass. if you can buy a movie from itunes on a computer and stream it off that, then ok maybe, but thats an extra step.

having said that, $169 for the device. thats really good.

i love my appletv, but i love it because ive put in the HD card for 720p MKVs (1080ps still dont work well), and its running xbmc (which connects to myth for PVR). i use the apple side every once in a while to rent a movie, i'd probably rent/buy 20-30 movies off it a year. not a heck of a lot, and thats mostly due to the prices of them. and the speed the movies come out (have to wait months for a $6.99 rental compared to spending $24.99 for a copy you own)

i will buy another one @ $169, its bugger all really. just not sure how much use ill get out of it....

how much does this cost a month? free ones i found never really worked that well. also do you just use boxee and setup a vpn in there some where?

I'd love to think so. We're often at least half a season if not more behind what's current in the US. I could see TVNZ and TV3 getting their knickers in a twist about circumvention of their planning however.

@Khull: I've looked into a VPN but you still need a US billing address for payment for Netflix so you have to buy a Paypal address or something like that... you end up paying 3 different outfits by my research.

www.witopia.net has the best VPN offer. But I still don't see how people will manage to run apple tv or other meda streaming devices over a VPN connection? You'd have to run the VPN service at the router level so any device connected to it, get an US or UK IP address.

I'd be in if they allowed limited AV apps -- such as the awesome Air Video -- so I could use it like my iPhone and iPad and stream arbitrary codecs in arbitrary containers to the device and into my AV system. I use my iPhone and iPad to do this sometimes (using the VGA connector) but would love an HDMI and touch-less interface like the Apple TV in a cute little hockey puck form factor for this kind of thing (and passing through AC3 too!)

@raven - I'm not quite sure but its about 80 USD on a rolling renewal so I don't scrutinize with the price. I strongly discourage using free VPNs as you might get into a security risk with replay attacks.

@JimmyC - yes make a note next time you visit an overseas country to open a local bank account - you never know when you'll ever need it. Having a US credit card is amazing as it opens up a whole market to purchase goods at a cheaper rate even after you factor tax and shipping costs

@billgates - if it runs the A4 chip, there should be ways around it eventually but one can temporarily run a VPN at a router level or set up a box that routes traffic via the VPN.

Pandora is amazing and so is Hulu and I might consider signing up for Netflix once NZ actually has decent internet data caps - sadly most of NZ is still oblivious to the rest of the world about consuming digital data.

I used to have a server in the US for testing Geekzone from overseas, but for some reason they changed their IP addresses - while it still seems to be in the US for me, some services don't believe it.

So to make sure I could still test from overseas I decided to use a VPN service - and following your link I decided to use PureVPN.

So far I haven't been able to connect. Their support keep telling me to use the right username and password, which I am copying from their registration email.

Obviously I am not impressed.
