As per the conversation I had with nonprayingmantis, PLP is poor value compared to Sky Sports ONLY if you have the sky basic package.

Sky have a market saturation short of around 900K people, this means that there is stil 4/5 of the population that couldn't receive EPL. So for them, PLP is good value.

For me PLP is poor value as I had Sky basic already but for some colleagues it work is considered to be good value as they didn't want sky at all.

it's 800-850k households, not people, which is about half the market (1.6m households I think in NZ)

I wonder how many of those watched EPL? Or how many of the households actually had Sky Sports? Do Sky release this sort of data? I don't believe for one second that PLP came in to the world without understanding the market...

a lot of info in skys annual report.

about 75% of their subs also have sky sports.

don't know how many watch the EPL, but bear in mind they do have a lot of other football on there too - world cup, champions league etc

I agree that my use of those terms might be subjective/non-technical, however I have plenty of '70's, '80's and '90's recordings of sport (rugby, cricket, football etc. and my old vcr rips and home video conversions) and none of them look anywhere near as bad on either my 27" monitor or my 50" Panasonic. For me, PLP is worse that 480p broadcast quality - with high-speed panning the ball/field/player is a blur, there is quite noticeable pixellation (very blocky) and the stream bumps and judders noticeably (remember, I have UFB so speed is not an issue). Sommet sports non-hd coverage looks considerably better IMHO and Sky's HD coverage and ESPN's HD coverage is streets ahead.

As mentioned, MLB and NFL GamePass (which is free in NZ so suggest you compare that to PLP) are far superior, so why can't PLP give us that quality? The answer is that they don't care about providing a quality product, they simply care about making as much money as possible. I'm far more supportive of Sommet as they at least are trying to provide a free service to kiwis and for that reason alone I can live with their non-hd broadcasts.

As for those who say PLP have opened up the ELP to all NZer's - I disagree. First, anyone rural or who doesn't get a decent broadband connection are now out in the cold whereas before they could have received ELP if they wanted. Second, as Sky now has 822,545 residential digital subscribers (49% of homes) and Mysky makes up 55% of those (see latest reports from NZHerald), I would assume the numbers of Kiwis watching the ELP will have fallen dramatically, especially amongst casual fans - not good for football in NZ.

I might sound like a fervant SKY employee/advocate, I'm not. I simply want a quality product - if PLP introduces high quality feeds I'll look at buying it. What would be better would be the US model of all major sports (in the US) being free-to-air in HD and if you want ESPN or non-blacked out games then you get Dish, Comcast or DirectTV etc. Many friends of mine in the US don't pay for any sports coverage at all due to the huge amount that is free-to-air - we will never get there due to population so that is why IMHO SKY was best as for a reasonable price you got a huge amount of sport - if each sport that I enjoyed cost $250 a year I'd be down a couple of grand at least (and I can't imagine rugby would only be $250).

I'll give you points for my HD statements. I guess I was thinking of the HD specs that do state a minimum framerate (60fps, 50 fps). And the p v i thing.

First impressions of the iphone app are pretty good. At least the winner of the match doesn't appear in bold! Video playback is good too but I can't seem to select a bit rate? It will be interesting to see how it looks when connected to a tv.

technically it should look no different to a native PC stream, unless the ios version uses a different stream from the flash version.

@DWL perhaps this is your comparison stream?

Using one now - iPhone 5. Doesnt seem to be anywhere where I can alter the bitrate.

I would describe the picture quality as adequate, a bit 'blocky' and slightly fuzzy. But I'm not convinced my wireless wifi is terribly brilliant, i use the router plugged into the laptop when I watch PLP on the TV (connected via HDMI to laptop)

I'm watching on an iPad (New iPad or whatever it was called at Xmas) - retina display.

Quality is very good. I'm on Wireless N at work.

There is no way to change or see the kbps however the resolution is clear and sharp.

Most importantly I am seeing NO motion judder.

At playback there is a button marked "CC" which appears to do nothing - should I presume that is closed captions or something.

This is my opinion

Procrastination eventually pays off.
