There was a lot of doubt early on, fair enough. A very small number of F1 glitches that weren't actually Sparks fault, so pop that down to teething troubles. Since then F1 has been rock solid, great picture, motion was same as Sky. I thought then it was a done deal, and if it stayed that way, everyone here would be happy as, easily a 9.5/10 . But as we know something has changed. Ugh

I think most peoples concerns were that it would be ok to start with but under load it would creak. Spark are saying that it's not that, it's compatibility, but surely they had plenty of time to test this earlier and come up with a workaround that didn't punish everyone? I have my suspicions there is something major behind the scenes they are not disclosing, but it's just a gut feeling.

In my view if they don't come up with an acceptable solution that works for all fans, there should be very serious consequences. At the very least SS should do what they did with the commercial sites and give it back to Sky so people have a second option. I am not sure how long it would take for something like that to occur and be good technically. I wouldn't be that surprised if it's somewhat already in the works.

I am fortunate that I have the resources to employ a backup solution but many many won't and on current offering most fans are going to end up with a significantly downgraded RWC experience.  My FIL bought the RWC pass, and I spent sometime yesterday getting the picture acceptable by employing some of the suggested motion settings, but nothing looks as good as what the Sky Broadcast of the game last night did, he's asked me to arrange an alternative :(. The unfortunate thing about this is he won't get as much of the Kiwi Commentary which he is upset with.

I believe that SS know what's at stake and I expect all their resources will be working on something but whether they have the time to do it is another question. Heres hoping.

I don't think it's been clarified by Spark what policy they will employ post start of the RWC if the motion isn't to peoples standards...

It was released in Beta. SS is on par with other streaming platforms (NFL, NBA etc)

From what I can see, people (Including me) overwhelming disagree. The motion is horrible compared to any other service I have seen.

What codec(s} is Spark using? Is there more than one feed available with different codecs?

Might be interesting to tackle this on a PC with late Nvidia and verify GPU decoding is active

I'm not suggesting this makes any difference interesting exercise only

Thats right, from day one it was a very good quality image and motion. From Wimbledon onwards its been shackled. Did any of those services start out as 10/10 visually for a few months then wind it back to 5/10?  I dont think so.

Hopefully, this will be resolved as it went go down well with the masses, come RWC

Its not a slight but noticeable degradation. Its worse.

I didn't use SS back then so cant say. All I can do is compare to NFL etc. NFL is still in 720 30fps at 4500 bitrate, so SS is better in that respect.

Like someone suggested it would be nice to have an option in account settings, maybe with a compatibility warning. But if I'm honest we shouldn't expect anything to change now. It's far too close to RWC to make software changes across all their apps before RWC. From a risk management POV it's probably easier to go ahead with 30fps and take the flack from some online.

Thats not relevant. Sky is interlaced and half FPS but it was very close to SS 1080p/60. So the numbers are not relevant as it depends on encoding, its about our EYES, that's all that really matters

So week one of the EPL - could anyone who paid for it give some feedback on the quality/fps of the live game streams?

I realize there's been no movement on this from Spark, but I'd appreciate some frank feedback from this audience.

Aside from the West Ham v Man City game in which there was an issue with the feed (was a mess in the second half) I can not complain but there is room for improvement. Just watching the Newcastle v Arsenal game now on Apple TV and the quality has definitely improved, I was getting noticeable judder every few seconds, this now seems smoother. No issues on my Samsung TV app which has been pretty solid since day 1.
Marks out of 10.. would give it a 7/7.5 Just my very humble opinion.

Edit... Would just add that the coverage loses marks as would like a bit of studio chat before/half time/after game.. I know this is not for all!

I'm watching the man utd vs Chelsea game and it's horrible. Sure I can watch it but it's not pleasant. Both my lcd and plasma have no motion smoothing features and both look bad. Tried android TV app as well as casting from my phone.

Looks quite good to me, on an iPad, not to a telly. I can send it to a telly later

Looks the same on my phone without casting... I can see that it is about 30 fps... I'm quite sensative to it and it's horrible to see everything judder.

I had to add some motion smooth settings on my TV so it could reduce the judder, its not optimal and honestly its pretty crap on your eyes for how much you pay for it. This new strobing playback style of sports streaming must be classed as a feature by now because I heard its here to stay.

Well...

The main thing to keep in mind, is that Spark Sport has removed half of the visual information.

So, in lay-mans terms... it's going to look rubbish.

This is half of the information missing from only a few weeks ago. Missing from when they launched their product.

Half of the information missing, compared to every other broadcaster in the world.

There is no coming back from that. It will look bad, until they reinstate an actual broadcast standard on their platform.

I think it's worth noting that it is actually not half the information missing.  Given F1, EPL, etc are all 25/30i source, it is all the information displayed at half the number of intervals.  The deinterlacing to 30p actually samples the two frame fields at once and outputs a single progressive frame, it doesn't drop a field.
