Benoire: I said this before in the thread, but I do not believe Internet based TV is currently viable. The distribution methods are far more variable with many factors that change the experience. As a catch up system, it would be fine but a primary first time distribution it is quite poor.

A new dimension for Internet based TV has just been added with Vodafone unveiling their UFB based multicast service here. This can probably provide a very stable HD service, direct to a TV set-top box which probably has PVR capabilities. This seems to tick a number of boxes.

However, it is a pity it will be multiple years before the bulk of the population can access the service and it would need commercial agreements with this major provider to allocate some of the channels for a "thru" type service for the content distribution model mentioned earlier. It will be fascinating watching how all these methods develop.

Of course, a similar product has been available for quite a long time on the (now ex) telstraclear cable network. It seems plausible that Vodafone will just use the T-Box or an upgraded version (I hope it's the latter, the current model really needs a better cooling system among other things) as the PVR. But all they've really done with it up until now is on-sold the Sky content. Apart from one or two obscure channels, we haven't really seen other players gaining access to that particular network. On the other hand, the cable network doesn't have a very big coverage area whereas this new product will be available to a much bigger share of the market so that presumably provides a bigger incentive for Vodafone to deal directly with content producers instead of just on-selling the Sky channels, which could open the door for PLP to come on board. I suppose the difficulty is that PLP is not a channel, it is a streaming service. If they want to retain their business model of showing every game live, they'd need to have access to up to 10 channels on the set top box (unless they just do the streaming thing on their website and select a few games to show over the STB like Sky did), and then probably find a way to fill at least some of them with content for the rest of the time, which they might not be so keen on doing. Still, none of those problems seem unsolvable so it will be fascinating to see if PLP decide to get involved.

Firstly, I must admit to not understanding many of the tech issues you're discussing here but would question if internet tv is not currently viable.

As I've mentioned in previous posts, the PLP viewing experience through my HDTV has been horrible (jerky and stuttery). However with global mode on, the streaming quality of BBC HD content, Hulu and Netflix has been fantastic and these are not only services that are not optimized for viewing in NZ but services that I should not be able to view in the first place. My download speed is around 11Mbps which should be attainable for most NZ households so why can PLP not provide a good quality service when others can? Based on my experience, it seems that they have issues with their delivery methods rather than the network not being up to it.

I think there is a substantial difference between Internet based TV or on demand services. For me personally, I like my content on a big screen with a remote to control the interface, to select what I want to similar to freeview or sky. Until IPTV can follow that similar process, I don't think it will have main stream viewing or go anything beyond catching up on missed episodes. IPTV in general is perfectly fine if the connection is there, I'm just not a fan of the whole mouse/keyboard or lack of show programming that is currently going through the motion.

PLPs issues are NeuLion and the distribution of content after encoding in my opinion for the most part (along with many other personal issues with the way the service is offered).

I had another patchy experience watching the Saints vs Swans game last night...long periods of very good quality interspersed with pixellated junk and on occasion, 30-second leaps forward in time.

It's those sudden jumps that really get me. I can be watching some particularly gripping goalmouth action, when all of a sudden the opposition goalkeeper is wandering around in the penalty area at the other end with the ball in his hand...WHAT ABOUT THE ACTION WHAT WAS JUST ON????

I'm certainly not keen on signing up again next season. It would be fine as a free or cheap supplemental service to a paid TV subscription, but as a primary delivery vessel? No thanks.

Benoire: Just got sent a survey by PLP about my issues with the service. Asked for honest answers so I gave a whole real of problems that I feel is currently wrong. Kindly got a day pass in return.

I also got sent the survey as someone who has not yet subscribed. Out of interest, is the day pass for the day you did the survey or is it a code you can use any time to register? I may aswell get it for the next round to test it out. If it's just for the day you do the survey I'll wait until next weekend.

Just watched the Norwich City vs Chelsea game on my 1080p laptop and it was pretty good. The occasional stutter after I fast forwarded a section, but otherwise smooth.

The stream came from Limelight cdn-117-121-253-254.syd.llnw.net (117.121.253.254), now I can't recall whether it was using Akamai before

It's hard to compare PLP to TV shows on HuluPlus (using some DNS hackery) as one is fast moving and the other not, but I still think HuluPlus has the edge.

I don't understand something. They've launched this news.premierleaguepass.com site with news etc. and they've put up the top 5 goals and saves of the week, but they've just uploaded them to youtube. wouldn't it be better to put them under the highlights section and then you'd be able to view through the apps?
Also on the tvnz website they have a 2 minute recap of some games like this http://tvnz.co.nz/football-news/highlights-fulham-vs-stoke-city-video-5605058 sky had these videos on their skysport.co.nz website last season along with the goals/save of week videos, plus also had a team of the week video, and a golden moment of the round video that had like the best bit of play from the round. these were all produced by the premier league so I'm sure they're still available. I used to get up in the morning and watch the videos of all the games and see all the goals with the 2 minute videos.
I'm just perplexed as to why they give them to tvnz to use (it even says source: premierleaguepass) and let people watch them for free and not give them to subscribers to watch.

Has anyone tried cancelling their subscription to get a refund ?

I'm sure I read you could cancel at any time and receive a refund for any remaining time on your 12 months but cant find it at the moment.

They are currently telling me they have no cancellation policy.

Until this morning I didn't realise that you can't start from the beginning of the match when its still live. I didn't want to wake at 05.00hrs so woke at 06.30 but couldn't start from the beginning, I had to watch from that point which pissed me of mightly. Cant quite understand why this can't be done.

Also can anyone else remember that they were promising SMART tv apps back in June? I can remember them suggesting that they were creating them but then heard nothing.

Yep, been there done that - if a game is in progress, you really should have the option of joining live or playing form the start of the game.

What I have done in the past (on a Laptop not sure about iPad etc), hit the Live button to bring up the game window, then quickly cover the screen with paper or something. Then work up slowly from the bottom of the screen until you just see the icons at the bottom of the game window. Then hit the very left most icon (Start Over?) and go to the start of the game. Slowly work up and make sure the stupid thing has indeed gone back to the start. Hook up laptop to TV, watch game, and hope the referee is not some idiot who will rob your team blind at the end :(

I was interested (surprised) to see a female assistant referee during the Hull game! I'm not implying anything by that statement just that you don't see that very often. Are there any female "full" referees I wonder?
