Pretty smart move by Samsung here - I'm sure they are putting more into the relationship than PLP are. I can see it selling a lot of TVs.

I agree it would be much better if these apps were platform agnostic (or, if all SmartTVs used the same OS).

Note - if you have another brand you are quite happy with, then a Samsung BD player with smarthub will sort it for you (as well as give you TV3, TVNZ and quickflix).

I wonder if subscribers who have been happily using the Android app all season will be able to request a refund now their access is being taken away from them. Or will the response from PLP be more like "you can still use your PC or buy a Samsung device."

As for a Samusung BD player, fine if you don't already have one. But I've got a PS3 for blu-ray and TVNZ on demand, I'm not paying out hundreds for another device that does the same.

I wonder if Samsung will push to disable Airplay from Apple devices?

Can they actually do that?  PLP have already said that the best way to watch is via airplay - they won't allow that to be disabled as it will reduce their consumer base and remove what is reported to be the best method of access.  Both feet would be shot!!

Airplay from my PLP app mysteriously stopped working (see my thread on streaming services) about two weeks ago! Do I smell a rat?

For clarification it was the ipad app.

The app store says there has been no changes to the app since last year - can the functionality be turned off without an update?

If I remember correctly from a previous question to PLP, the "player" that the app uses is the built in player and not a standalone player - perhaps there is an issue with airplay, does it work for anything else?

Yep it works in app for everything else (e.g. Youtube) and mirroring also works. If I Airplay from the PLP app I get the message (from memory as I am at work) 'unable to lead content. Please try again later'. This message appears on the tv screen via Apple TV , not on the ipad.

Perhaps there is some checksums in the stream that determine device availibility?

My iPad is still airplaying PLP to ATV, dropouts not withstanding.

This is their reply to my email:

The deal means that Samsung will be the exclusive Smart TV partner and apps for other TV makes will not be available.

However, it is very easy to connect most laptops to TVs with a single HDMI cable, and we would encourage owners of other TV brands to do this.

Of course, connecting the laptop to the TV via HDMI is not suitable for streaming video as it doesn't tend to transfer very well between screens. I tried this earlier in the season when I got a free 24 hours pass for completing their survey and it was fine on the laptop but unwatchable on my TV. It was so jerky that it felt like it was filmed on a handheld camcorder. Guess I'll have to stick with Sky delays and downloads.

I replied with what I posted above about the poor quality when connecting the laptop to TV via HDMI and this is their response:

Connecting via HDMI should not cause any picture degradation. It could be an issue with the HDMI adapter or cable, graphics adapter or GPU (graphics processor) power in the laptop. Essentially HDMI should be able to mirror an image and exactly the same, if not better quality/resolution on your TV screen. I have four laptops (three at home, one at work) and two TVs (one at home and one at work) and all look great when connected via HDMI - it might be worthwhile getting a technician to check your setup. We have in house outreach staff, there is a cost but it is usually significantly lower than most other technician outcalls.

So for those more technical than me, is he talking bollocks? Has anyone achieved an acceptable picture on PLP by connecting a laptop to a TV? Nothing wrong with my HDMI cable by the way, it's the one I use with my PS3 and I simply unplugged it from that and connected it to the laptop when I tried it. My laptop's graphics card is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650.

Yes it's the method I use all the time. I bring my laptop home from work as it gives a better picture. I usually have my output set to 720p instead of full 1080p because I can't see any real benefit and then have the stream at 1600kbps - for some reason that produces a better stream for me.

I think they have over simplified the HDMI quality issue though and having a tech look at your laptop is probably not going to improve the quality it produces - there are more technically capable people here to answer that part of your question.

In the graphics card settings there should be an option to turn off or turn down 'hardware acceleration'.
