Surely there should be some clause that the purchaser has to make use of the rights or they can be put back up for sale?
Just seems crazy that the rights are currently sat with someone who lacks the intent to broadcast to the NZ market.
They should atleast have the condition in that if won it must be offered as right now, we do not even know how much BEin would charge for the service. Being forced to sell to a particular character is not appropriate, but adding conditions is.

This is bloomin ridiculous and has risen purely out of the Football Association's greed and lack of giving at toss to the supporters. Obviously the TV rights price is set far too high which is good for them but not good for anyone watching the sport. I am going to write to the FA and complain and would suggest everyone else does. Probably wont do anything but it may just at least get them to think about the impact it has, which will only be detrimental to them long term.
The FA dont set the price. Those that want it put in bids in a blind auction. Rights are awarded to the highest bidder. So if someone wants to pay a ridiculous amount (say $150m over 3 years to serve just 25m people) thats their problem. Cant blame the FA unless you think they should be selling their valuable content on the basis of "who are the nicest people".
Forget who are the nicest people, the FA should be concerned with "who can provide the service". And, they should have some minimum service level required so that the viewers aren't negatively affected.
I, for one, have pretty much lost interest in the premier league now and most of the blame lies with PLP. I've had a subscription all 3 years but this year I might have watched 2 matches using PLP.
Surely, the FA needs to be concerned with the quality of delivery of their product?

Unfortunately while the cash keeps rolling, they won't care. Now, if the impact affects their UK selling then they would seriously care but NZ is on the other side of the world and miles away from their care or visibility.

And USD10m is less than a rounding error in the total global rights earned for the next 3 seasons.

As BT Sports only has UK rights and BeIN has the Australia/NZ rights I'm going to guess that its not international. But subscribe to BT Sports and see.

I personally never had a problem with PLP; it gave me every match I wanted to see, when I wanted to see it. $200 a year was a price i was happy to pay.
I'd be delighted to pay something like that again. I don't want to get forced into a bundled situation where i pay 4 or 5 times as much, in order to pay for their Rugby deals.
I don't want the bulk of what they are selling, just the football and maybe a little cricket from time to time. I'm delighted to pay a fair price for me. 20th century content models and concepts like "channels" are dead.

yeah thats what i was thinking but on their website it says "Absolutely anyone can watch the Europa League final...". Being an international site they should be explicit and state exactly who "Absolutely anyone" is. Anyhow...
I might have to get a uk ip address to watch it, but would be good if I did not have to.

BTW, the reason that BT Sport is making the final free to all via Youtube - massive drop in audiences on BTSport compared to ITV last year. In its first year of the contract its got the UEFA worried about future audiences (and value).

that's interesting to know, would really like to see some of the numbers behind these deals.

This article seems to suggest negotiations are still ongoing.
I can't find any more detail of the supposed email from BEIN sports which says something about the rights being 'available soon'.
Presumably the original contract from the EPL includes a condition that the games are broadcast as they would want the games shown to as many people around the world as possible, not have rights holders hoarding the rights and not screening them. Still expect Sky will eventually agree a cut price deal at the last minute when Bein cave in and realise it's better to get at least some money back. It may not be the deal either of them want but it will be better for both of them than no deal.
NZ Herald reporting that Sky are close to striking a deal with BeIN for the EPL rights.
Hopefully this means I can breath a sigh of relief with regards to my football addiction.
Purely speculation on my part, but I wonder if the merger with Vodafone could potentially see a 'premier league pass' type streaming service at some point in the next year or so?
