i don't have an issue with it being streaming, my issue is the late notice and unpreparedness of spark. should be hurrying to release apps or test different streaming weeks out from the tournament. nor needing to stream FTA on TVNZ.

just bad timing.

Spark won the rights in April 2018.  How long do you think is appropriate to be prepared for the tournament?

Selected a provider in November 2018.

It launched in Feb 2019.

Seems like plenty of time, doesnt it?

judging by the outcomes thus far im going to say no.

Mb2007: The boss of spark said on newstalk zb on Monday in response to people saying the highlights package had no commentary. He planed the primer league tv, with is crap spark should be on top of this. Outher countries can get commentary.

Can't be the boss then. The Spark boss is a woman. The chair person at Spark is a woman.

Probably someone else.

I think they have left it way to late. One full year in advance the app would have needed to be out minimum.

They don't seem to have an understanding of what they can offier. Keep changing the quality of the app, unclear what platforms the app works on. There development is way behind. They should have teamed up with a providor and had a hdmi stick or something. Like an amazon fire stick or now tv roku stick.

The apps interface is crap it is not clear what's on when no schedule and slow to update new content. And the downgraded coverage of the primer league shows they do not have a gd understanding of the product.

I fear big problems in a number of areas for spark come the world Cup,

Toney

Recall that PremierLeaguePass won the rights in Jun 13 and had a launch 2 months later.  With an app (albeit a smaller ecosystem 6 years ago).  But it took 12 months to get the quality of the stream right and iron out the bugs.  So a 12-15 month window seems like a reasonable period.

It took Spark 7 months to just pick a platform.  With a massive revenue, profit and employee base it had plenty of opportunity to move quickly and AGILE-Y to address this in a timeframe that could have covered the U20's competitions in mid 2018.  But it dithered instead.  Imagine having an extra 12 months to iron out issues after testing on content that has some appeal (and was simulcast on TVNZ) but not likely to generate huge traffic.

You'd think a telco with its background and knowledge with substantial software development capabilities would have a core competency in this space compared to a no-employee startup.  But no.

Not sure what to say, it cant go back to Sky as Sky has years and years of Sky bashing threads here. Maybe give it to TVNZ with a 10% off voucher for UHF installs?

Not liking the provider beats the provider not being able deliver in most people's books I'd say.

Spark said they'd give it to tvnz if it fails and sky people can access it that way if the worst happens. Tonight will be an interesting test but still nothing like the viewers of the actual matches

My point was the fickleness of people these days. One day its loathing Sky now its loathing Spark. Its like that for many things these days, everyone wants to bicker. Streaming is the be all and end all, now its a klunkfest to get working. The article referred, was about streaming, not about Sparks teething issues. So thuis disdain is about streaming as a function. Reaction to change. Ironically SkySportNow is pretty darn average, motion issues.

Do you mean the number of viewers? How many does Netflix have on any given night? They must have 200,000?

As far as delivery is concerned, my F1 season continues to be boringly streamed to me, smooth, sharp. (apart from the brief frame rate fiasco)

If tonight went perfect there will be no noise. If there was a teeny glitch, add 20 pages to this thread

What Spark should have done is offer an STB option which they come and install for less tech savvy folk.

Interesting release from Opinion Compare, the sibling company to Broadband Compare (leaving out the last paragraph where it mentions you get a better RWC experience if you use BC to switch providers...

[snip]

I have just seen that the 1250 responses were from a self selected group of only 6000 people that SIGNED UP TO DO SURVEYS FOR REWARDS.

https://www.opinioncompare.co.nz/l/free-paid-nz-online-surveys

Actively signed up to do surveys... Comfortable using a computer... Comfortable with providing personal information online...

Sorry, that completely invalidates the data of that survey in my opinion - as someone that HAS does postgrad experimental design and stats.

Cheers - N

[edit] Oh, it may have been 1250 responses from the 6000 users that have signed up - so only those with a strong opinion may have responded - as we all know those are evenly distributed between positive and negative (Sarcasm!).

It was Spark Sport Jeff Latch. Some sort of manager.

SA v Japan looks amazing. Reckon as its now back to 60fps and possibly that extra bitrate helping too. I'd say it looks noticeably better than Sky now.
