The rights were sold for about USD10m for each of the 3-year contracts. NZ was about the only country in the world where the rights were sold for the same (or less) in USD terms. If M&P Silvia (the wholesaler for 2013-2016) sold the rights for [USD]1m per season to PLP then M&P Silvia sold them at a massive loss per season. The current rights would be worth NZD4.8m per season based on USD10m over 3 years at a reasonable forward exchange rate.
The only saving grace was the previous contract was set at a very favourable exchange rate.
tks ockel, i somehow thought being paid 3 times more that plp...wonder how much bein offered more than plp offered for the 2nd 3 year contract. And if it was a similar price to the 1st 3 year contrat, why did plp not buy it?
I have a feeling that PLP paid about 3x more (in USD terms) than sky did but I'm not sure on that. As to why plp didnt buy it? Not sure but I'd speculate that not enough subscribers to warrant bidding higher than it did, and possibly thought that the higher price paid for 2013-2016 (vs 2010-2013) may have kept others (probably just expecting Sky to bid) out of the market. I dont think anyone guessed on BeIn's ambition to be the new ESPN.
BeIN paid nearly 4 x what PLP did for the previous round. PLP again outbid SKY in the latest round but lost out to BeIN.
So this information is not true?
