jbard: As a person who doesn't have sky but would love to watch the EPL this is great news. I would be the first to sign up for a online streaming of the EPL :)

To be honest I have reservations for an online only stream. For a start I'd want it to be a high bit rate 1080i stream, with as little compression as possible. Think how much data that would use for a single match?! I normally watch a number of games over the weekend and that would be a large drain on my internet data allowance compared to satellite delivery, I really hope it is online and via DVB-S/S2 as well.

Secondly this really would screw up Sky Sports for me. I have sports for two reasons, F1 in HD and EPL. Without EPL I have trouble justifying Sports but I can't get a decent online F1 stream here in NZ.

I'd hope to hell it is cheap, otherwise it won't work. Setanta in the UK bought 1/2 of the EPL rights in the UK, charged 10 pounds a month and it didn't last very long... Lots of people are reluctant to spend more money on providers when they already have one.

The Herald were saying $180-200/year but its all speculation as they also said it could be delivered via another STB which is highly unlikely IMHO

I'd be interested to know, now that Sky doesn't have the broadcast rights, if Setanta Australia would sell a subscription here.

When I contacted them on behalf of a work colleague about a year ago, they wouldn't sell a New Zealander a subscription because the broadcast rights were owned by Sky Sports.

I didn't care if it was saellite broadcast or internet.

IF it is online, I hope it can be integrated in to my existing Media system of central server / clients like I've done with other online content and Sky, if they have their own viewing card I hope it can run in Oscam or similar as I'm not going to ditch my rather expensive IPTV setup for the sake of football however much that seems like sacrilege! (I'm from the north west of England and football is in my blood!)

Unlikely, how well is Netflix/Hulu/tvnz ondemand integrated into your xexisting media system

I don't sub to Netflix or Hulu (I got rid of my VPN) but with OnlineVideos in MediaPortal they apparently work well, it simply will depend on the content stream and how they sign in... Most PPV sites can be made to work but it would be depressing to be honest... Not that I support Sky in the slightest for the prices, BUT having seen Setanta in the UK fail I worry that if they don't have other content how many will actually sign up to having Sky and another provider?

My speculation:

- It'll be released as an online package, with several pricing options (per game, per team, per year etc)
- There'll be a few apps released for TV's, consoles and tablets
- At best it'll be 720p (can you imagine anything else with the restrictive caps we have in NZ?)
- Might also be delivered on Freeview's up-and-coming MHEG5 platform?
- There could be an option to watch games on demand, or as highlights.

If it is online, hopefully there will be a facility to choose which one of the 3pm kick off games you want to watch, rather than having a game chosen by the broadcaster.

All speculation though, it could be that this is a multi-year deal, and this new consortium could take 6-12 months getting the infrastructure in place before they can launch (worst case scenario).

Sommet doesn't have EPL, we came second in the bidding, MP & Silva sold the rights to an internet start up called colesseum

so maybe the herald (or sommet sports) has spelling problems? lol

ETA: I hope they do well, but my pessemistic opinion is that they wont get enough customers to make any money on EPL alone, and will be forced to sell the rights to sky for a token amount, and sky will come off as heroes by picking up the slack.

It even has EPL in the name: COLISEUM EPL MANAGEMENT LIMITED (from the companies page listing above)
