Quickflix: Hey Everyone!

Good to see discussion is live and well in regards to Quickflix and TiVo. Feel free to shoot some questions my way and I'll be sure to check this regularly and answer them as best I can.

Will it stream in realtime like the PC version, or download in advance and sit on the Tivo harddrive for a time like Caspar did? Anyway great news.

Can you describe the sequence of events that led to this arrangement? Did you approach Hybrid - or did you go straight to their owners? If so, were they keen or did they blow you off initially and then change their minds? Or did THEY approach YOU?

I thought Quickflix would never appear on Tivo (particularly in NZ) because Quickflix is a pay tv competitor, and anyway Tivo is being kept on bare minimum life support with no other purpose than to prevent anyone else getting their hands on it. So the background of Quickflix's appearance might provide a hint about the future of Tivo (and maybe Igloo too).

The most obvious possibility is CASPA costs money to keep running and they want to switch it off. But why bother providing a replacement for customers that aren't even paying anything? I speculate that it's part of the franchise deal - Hybrid was supposed to bring in on-demand revenue in exchange for not charging customers a monthly fee like Tivo does in many other regions. So on-demand may have been a contractual requirement.

Less likely is TVNZ is unhappy because Igloo hasn't been a runaway success due to Sky imposing too many anti-cannibalisation restrictions, and they're blowing the dust off Tivo to see if they can do anything with it. Then they'll probably get distracted and go off and invest in some other random platform because you can't have too many.

The least obvious possibility is Hybrid, Telecom and others are secretly in the process of dropping megabucks to launch the Tivo Roamio series in Australasia, and this is a first step in establishing their on demand partners. But if the latest Tivos retail for $920 like they did at the 2009 launch, why wouldn't everyone just buy an Xbox One instead?

Any plans to get some more up to date shows/movies on QuickFlix? It doesn't look like its changed much since I last tried it a few months ago. Almost got me excited.

Hi All, I'm also jumping in here to answer a few queries. Afraid we can't go into details about how and why we did this deal because it's confidential, but we're excited to expand the content on offer for TiVo owners and I think you'll enjoy the app.

To answer another question, it'll download like CASPA.

Also, this is unrelated to Freeview. The Freeview MHEG IC technology isn't compatible with TiVo so when we launch our Freeview interactive channel, it won't be picked up by TiVo boxes, so another solution was required.

Finally, we're working hard on new content and will have news on several fronts pretty soon.

Yes, thanks Paddy. Good luck with the new content. I would pick up quickflix if it could be similar to Netflix (which I currently run on an AppleTV). I'd rather support a local operation.

Also - how about an App for AppleTV?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Let's keep to TiVo in this thread - I'll have a look in the online streaming forum from time to time so feel free to start up new topics there with other questions. Unfortunately there's a lot of stuff we just can't answer because of confidentiality restrictions but I'll try me best!

Neat- some more uses for our Tivo box.
Think I downloaded 1 CASPA movie.
Hope for better content range however.

Sadly I think the unmetering will be stopping but you should check with Telecom to be sure of the position.

I hope not, I'm pretty sure it was a permanent feature when I bought the TiVo.

telecom metering is still broken for telecom tivo owners

here's hoping quickflix is much improved over the last free trial !

that was so awful i barely last two days before cancelling.

and don't forget the 1c charge when you cancel.
