The format shifting discussion really is flogging dead a horse, it cannot be done.
It does not matter what format, it is not allowed in NZ. Time shifting some music, ie recording the radio to cassette is a different matter. But what you are asking is not supported by lightbox.

No im not trying to perform a low blow. Its hard to read and the format is incorrect and doesn't read historically.

Although tivo allows you to format shift when you have the home networking package, with the official tivo software. So you can potentially watch tv on an ipad etc.

I had access to the content on Lightbox (Beta) but crappy internet made watching it difficult (buffering) so I justified D/L "Orphan Black" series 1 from PBay so I could watch a show I found I liked (justifying that with legal access to it I had legal/moral right to see it, if not functional access to do so legitimately)

Thoughts? timeshift or format shift happening? (deleted content after watching)

Unless they implement an offline model as part of their software (similar to what bbc iplayer can do), there's no legal way of keeping the stream for watching later.

A download option as part of the player would go a long way for letting those on slower connections view content (let it download over night etc) and watch it from cache.

But I'm not away of any paid streaming service that does this. The pay per item services to generally allow this, and a couple of the free broadcaster based services (bbc, itv).

you're best bet is software like playon who has a play later app which lets you record streams and watch later. however they would need to add support for lightbox or someone would need to write a plugin for it.

but you're missing the point of a streaming service. the idea is you dont have to store the shows, you just watch when you want on the device you want. netflix rarely (not sure if its ever done...) removes tv shows, lightbox will hopefully be the same.

Interestingly the BBC iPlayer allows you to download in order to deal with slow internet connections and to also watch offline. The download is only then available for 30 days. So here is an example of both a streaming and download service in one - only difference is that they own their own content.

Yeah, But in this case the end user doesnt get to keep a copy. So its not pirating to be exact.
Must be far from anything illegal given England and their piracy laws.

This OP isn't after pirating. I believe he's looking for something exactly for this purpose, has a slow connection that can't keep up with streaming live, and want to pre-download it to watch without buffering continuously.

I just don't think such a thing exists. Also not sure what would happen if you started a stream....and hit the pause button till it's all downloaded...but I don't think the streaming services will pull down the entire video just segments.

Usually in a few minute segments like youtube does.
Check the silverlight settings and see if there is an option to do that.

The OP has said one of his goals is to be able to keep the content to view it after such a time as it is no longer available on Lightbox. Given the nature of these services, I would imagine that's certainly a no-no (as it's likely removed due to no longer being licensed or similar).

In the case of LightBox, this won't pulldown the entire video, at least not with the iPad app. In fact, if we pause the video for too long (approx 1 minute +), the stream will only continue to the end of its current buffer (1-2 minutes), and then will refuse to stream until you exit out of the episode you're watching and press 'Play' again.
