Interface looks better than lightbox. Those covers scroll evenly for once.

networkn: Wow what a lot of hate. Spiderman is $8 to rent, in HD. Would cost me 6-7 to rent on BR and then I'd have to drive, which would certainly cost another $2-3 and then I'd have to go out into the wet and cold, and afterwards return it another $2-3, possibly pay a late fee etc..

We Kiwi's really need to get a new more positive approach. I have really noticed how negative GZ is too recently. Shame really.

for a old movie paying $7.99 is just overpriced.  paying that for a new release within a few months of release is fine.  they need to bring down their prices for older content IMO or offer a subscription model.

It's not that "Geekzone is negative". The site is not negative. The site doesn't think. You folks have to remember to distance the site from the users. It's just that there's a good representation of the the people in this country - when you think of 400,000 - 500,000 unique visitors a month with a good chunk (more than half) being from NZ...

Some people want "unlimited" broadband for $19.95 and when it comes full of problems, they complain. And when presented with the fact that "unlimited" is actually going to cost $89.95... They complain.

Everything has a cost but NZers seem to really complain about prices, without considering this is a brand new market model, which means new infrastructure, human resources (content management, support, technical, etc) and other things such as networks (peering, CDNs where used, etc).

I bet many think that if Netflix came to New Zealand it would be priced the same as in the USA... Which I doubt would happen (the pricing).

Does anyone know if the iOS apps support AirPlay? I see mention of Chromecast on the website, but AirPlay seems noticeably absent.

Agreed, no way would Netflic be the equivalent of USD8 per month if it launches here. More like the same price as Lightbox. I feel $15 is reasonable for an AYCE Streaming service.

I don't for a moment expect it to be priced the same as a US-based service, but I do expect it to be cheaper than buying the same title on Bluray locally (from The Warehouse etc), which for the small handful I looked through was not the case. I'd also expect that for HD content, it specify if it's 720p or 1080p, especially given the pricing.

Their rental pricing seems 'flat', by that I mean, the same price to rent a new release as an older movie. Let's look at The Winter Soldier (New Release) vs Silver Linings Playbook (2012 release). Both are $6.99SD/$7.99HD to rent, or $19.99SD/$24.99HD to buy. Yet in-store, SLP is significantly cheaper to rent than TWS. Likewise, to buy these titles elsewhere on DVD or Bluray is $35/$28 for Winter Solder, but $15/10 to Silver Linings. So they're well priced to buy the new release, but very overpriced for non-new-release content.

I know it varies from store to store, but our local VideoEzy often has 3 for $10 for weekly rentals (i.e. not new releases), which is ~$3.33 each. I'd have thought $3.99 for SD ($4.99 for HD) for non-new-releases online would be more reasonable pricing, personally.

Their TV show section is a bit different, too. There's no longer a rent option, it's buy only, and SD/HD is no longer a dropdown, it's a separate toggle off to the right. Like movies, their pricing seems all over the show - Revolution for example is $50 for season 1, but the DVD in shops is around $30, but Arrow Season 1 online is $30, the same as the DVD in-store. Individual episodes of either show are the same price, but Arrow has more episodes. It just doesn't make much sense, and the up-and-down pricing nature means, having seen Arrow for $30, then finding another series and seeing it $50, it's off-putting, imo. Some don't say whether they are SD or HD (and have no toggle to choose).

Their FAQ says "Television shows are currently available on Video Ezy On Demand for purchase only. Individual episodes are $2.99 SD or $3.49 HD.", yet most shows I looked at the pricing is $3.49 for SD and $3.99 for HD.

So, I think they need to be more consistent with their UI, and have a more simple tiered pricing structure.

This is consistent with itunes etc.  Movies are purchasable and rentable, tv is only purchase.

I realise that, my point with that quote was that the pricing in their FAQ is different from the actual pricing, so intended to point out they may wish to update the FAQ. If you give pricing in two places, you need to update both when pricing changes.

My local video store does three new releases (Blu-ray) for $10, and it is a five minute walk away

Seems that as with virtually every other 'purchase/rental' similar service in NZ - (iTunes, Quickflix premium, Ezyflix,) the pricing for the very recent releases (i.e. just released on DVD) are 'ok', but the prices for everything that isn't brand brand new is absolutely terrible value.

Why buy a single measly season of Breaking Bad for ~$32,  when you can subscribe to Lightbox and watch all seasons as well as loads of other shows for $15/month.

If you want to watch all 5 seasons of Breaking Bad (and why would you only buy one season?), that is going to cost you around $160 with these services,  which is basically the same price as an entire year's Lightbox subscription.
The value comparison is just so massively skewed in favour of subscription service it's laughable that they would even bother selling the likes of breaking bad this way.

Possibly a fairer deal when you look at it like that. But then Vudu rent it to you for $4 USD in the states, approx $5.35 NZD (incl NZ gst).

Why would it be as cheap? Economies of Scale, cost of labour etc etc.

Perhaps if everyone signs up and gives it a fair chance, then the price will drop. I imagine the up front cost of doing something like this would be mind boggling. They need to make money too!

I don't think it would be necessarily exactly the same, but I would expect them to be the a little closer. And you're right they need to make a profit otherwise why bother. I'm wondering if the prices may actaully be set by the studios, and Video Ezy has little choice in the matter, that wouldn't suprise me at all. It's well known that some of the big US companies like to charge more in Australia and New Zealand, and this may just be a case of the Movie studios doing the same, just a theory.

GZ is a community of people. It wouldn't exist without the people, and my observations is that overall, a lot of the commentary here for the past few months has a negative focus. I am not criticizing you, or the software (obviously), or the moderators or anyone that provides the platform. It was an observation that
typically GZ members are hyper critical of new startups unless they are super cheap, perfect in every way, have flawless customer service and did I mention cheap? I am sorry that I didn't specify the "members" clearly enough, but I believed it was a reasonable conclusion to draw that people would understand the inference.

Your other comments are correct, peoples expectations in NZ need a reality check. Sadly some of the worst cases I have seen are from people who should really know better :)
